The only downside I've noticed is that it doesn't trigger on updated blog posts

this is an excellent suggestion and I set it up myself a week ago - although my recipe just looks at new posts in http://blog.whmcs.com/secrss.php - the security thread rather than all posts.

 

i've had 2 emails from IFTTT overnight and nothing from WHMCS - so without this, I wouldn't have known about the latest update.

Just have it send an email to your mail-to-SMS gateway address. For example, in the US, AT&T is yournumber@txt.att.net and Verizon is yournumber@vtext.com. Here is a list of SMS gateways:

Depending on your country, there is an option to do this with IFTTT - it supposedly works in the USA.
