7.9.2 - New PayPal module - does it allow us to switch off subscriptions?

I notice 7.9.2 is now released and the new module supports subscriptions.

I use the original PayPal Basic module and have the 'Never show the subscription payment button' checked - so customers need to pay manually each invoice via paypal. 

I want to continue this rather than have subscriptions. Can WHMCS confirm this new module can do this?

Same question, the new Paypal module after the update to 7.9.2 no longer offers One-time payments, just only Subscribe.

I’ll never use subscription. It’s to inflexible and seems to create more problems than it’s worth.

 

come on WHMCS give us a module that can at least match the features of the old one!

As of 7.9.x the option to hide subscriptions is gone on the new module. You'll have to use the 'Paypal Basic' gateway or whatever they're calling it now.

Hi all,

The new PayPal module does not currently have the option to suppress one of other of the payment options. Instead the payment option the user sees depends upon the products being ordered; the Checkout buttons are only displayed on the cart summary when the cart contains one-time products. If ordering a recurring product, they will go through the checkout workflow as usual and can create a PayPal Subscription.

The enhancements to subscription handling mean we feel that some of the problems with subscriptions in the PayPal Basic module - particularly duplicate subscriptions - are negated.

If the ability to force one-time payments is important to your business model, then he PayPal Basic module remains in place and supported, so you are welcome to keep using that, and we can iterate on the new PayPal module as necessary.

What happens if the invoiced sum changes from time to time? Will the new paypal module manage that? (if subscription is choosen).

payment < new amount = Unpaid proforma

payment > new amount = Overpayment... and there is a little @Kian somewhere that falls down dead 😖

The subscription amount won't be changed if the invoice total varies.

PayPal Subscriptions aren't really designed to be used in this way. Whilst there is an option to vary subscription payments in a limited way, in our experience the complexity of implementing it doesn't offer the flexibility users expect. As a result we have taken the decision not to implement that.

However PayPal are working on a new payment solution later this year, which we hope to offer in future, which should offer more flexibility to vary payment amounts.

In that case I believe it should be possible to disable subscription payments. Why not simply implement that in the new paypal module?

Having an option to disable PayPal subscriptions is a must for the new PayPal module. We've had too much troubles with PayPal subscriptions so we've disabled them in the "old" PayPal module.

We made the decision to stick with the original paypal module. As WHMCS informed us:

The cart summary will now only show the paypal buttons if there are no recurring products in the cart as these are one-time payment buttons.

For recurring products we encourage users to create subscriptions which will be offered when the client clicks through to complete the order.

When you say "can create a subscription" is that the only "forced" option? Can they still choose to pay as a one time payment?

@Vox if you are wanting to continue offering One Time Payments you would stay with the "PayPal Basic" module

so i'm not seeing any real benefit from enabling this new paypay module, also it seems it will confuse customers having 2 paypal modules.

I noticed at least 2 people say that paypal subscriptions are problematic, in what way?

Basically, the new module is for one time purchases and the buttons only show up when there's a service in the cart that is one time. For us, in the hosting industry, one time purchases don't really ever happen. We disabled the new module and enabled the old one (Paypal Basic) and that's all we use.

I have to agree. This needs the option to turn subscriptions off. A lot of our clients are complaining about this, they do not want subscriptions especially with Covid putting financial pressure  on most people they want to be in control of what day they pay each month.

Recurring payments are more trouble than they are worth, people forget they set them up and end up paying twice which means extra staff hours processing refunds and losing paypal fees.

It is VERY useful to clients to not have to leave the site to pay but until subscriptions are optional this plugin is not fit for use.
