Child or Sub Templates, how can I remain my modifications after an update

Hi any time there is a update I have to re-make all the customizations. How can I insert or remove lines on my templates using a child or sub system as Opencart (xml) or Wordpress (child themes for css and php functions)?

wouldn't it be easier to rename your template so that you didn't overwrite it when updating? that way, when you update, you can just compare any template updates in the updated template with your custom template.

Yes, that is exactly what I do, I have a long list of changes I must re-do...
