Posting this to bring this back to the top as it was never made a sticky!
Did we ever say we would do that?

I have faith in the human element and believe that many will contribute in their own time and give back, making this "jump start" even more beneficial...

I hope you're right, but in my many years of experience, I'm guessing that most of the folks that grabbed your kb will never update their copy and won't be back to share. They have no vested interest in the kb, and will soon forget they "owed" anyone anything. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that someone is selling it...

...yours in cynicism.

This knowledge base article is filled with great tips on setting up your account to reduce 99.9% of spam in your inbox.

Create Mail Accounts:

Create mailboxes in your hosting control panel, Mail, Manage/Add/Remove Accounts. Click add an account to create each mailbox you require. It is best to not give these mailboxes too generic names as bots will target the most common names. An example of a generic name is webmaster@yourdomain.com

Default Address:

Once these are setup, in your hosting control panel go to Mail, Default Address, Set Default Address. Here enter

":fail: no such address here"

and click change. This will setup your account so that any mail sent to a mail account that you have not created to bounce back to the spammer. This also works fantastic in conjunction with our dictionary attack defense system. A dictionary attack is spam sent to common names @yourdomain.com. If a spammer sends to more than four invalid email addresses at your domain they will automatically be blocked from sending mail to the server.

SpamAssassin:

This is located under Mail, SpamAssassin. SpamAssassin is a great tool that analyzes the content of email and marks it as SPAM based on a score system. If an email contains a common subject known for SPAM or contains too many frequent words it will be marked as **SPAM**. An example is "Buy Viagra Now! Click Here"

If you are receiving legitimate email that is being marked as spam you can configure SpamAssassin to accept emails with the subject, from the sender, increase the score it requires to mark it as spam or disable it all together.

SpamBox:

You can also set a Spam Box. Any email that qualifies under the SpamAssassin system as SPAM will be sent directly to a SPAM box under the associated email account.

BoxTrapper:

BoxTrapper is an excellent tool which requires the mail sender to respond to an email sent back immediately from the server to verify they are sending the email. If you receive a lot of email daily this may be inconvenient. If this is a new account or spam is very bad and you cannot rename your mailbox then this can be a great feature to use.

Spam/Virus Protection Settings:

Linked from your control panels main page. You typically want to leave all these enabled. Each performs a separate function when scanning emails.

Virus Scanning:

Virus scanning uses the latest definition files on the server to scan email for any virus/trojans. This will not guarantee an email will not get through so it is best to still use an up-to-date anti-virus program on your PC.

Spam Scanning:

This option enables or disables SpamAssassin.

RBL checking:

Realtime Blackhole List, a list of IP addresses whose owners refuse to stop the proliferation of spam. The RBL usually lists server IP addresses from ISPs whose customers are responsible for the spam and from ISPs whose servers are hijacked for spam relay.

File Type Scanning:

Some viruses/worms have been spread by attachment in known file types. File Type Scanner is configured to block following file types; ".ade, .adp, .bas, .chm, .crt, .eml, .exe, .hlp, .hta, .inf, .ins, .isp, .jse, .lnk, .mdb, .mde, .msc, .msi, .msp, .pcd, .sct, .shs, .url, .vbs, .vbe, .wsf, .wsh, .wsc".

However ".bat, .cmd, .com, .cpl, .pif, .reg, .scr" attachments will not be accepted. If you need to send this file type then please package it up as a zip file and resend it.

Email Harvesters/Bots:

There are many programs that go out and scan websites specifically for email addresses. When located they will add the email address to a list which a spammer then uses to send out mail. It is best to never list an email address in text or html link on yours or anyone elses website. If you are using a form on your site make sure the email address is not viewable by the browser. Most very basic html forms require the email address. We suggest creating an image with your email address in it or use an up to date PHP form which hides your email address. You can find many @

http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Form_Processing/

Free Link Pages/FFA Sites:

We do not recommend using these pages as your link may only last a few hours and are slammed with hundreds of other links which the search engines dismiss or even score your site negatively as a result. The object of these lists are to aquire your email address so that the webmaster of that site and people under him/her can send you SPAM. If you insist on using and submitting to these types of websites we recommend you create a new email account specifically for submitting and you will receive SPAM in that account instead of accounts you use daily.

If you have an account with us and continue to get spam'd there are a few steps you can take. First enable Spam Assassin. With Spam Assassin you can also include email address sources into your blacklist.

If you can copy the message source of the email, go to http://www.spamcop.com and paste the source and you can locate their ISP and report them via email.

This can also be used to locate spoofers in many cases.

With Outlook Express open the email, go to file, properties, details, message source, ctrl-a (select all), ctrl-c (copy), then go to Spamcop.com and paste that into the field.

To do this in Horde open the message, click show all headers/show mailing list information, message source link, copy all then go to Spamcop.com and paste that into the field.

To prevent SPAM in the future you will want to remove any email links on your website as this is where some bad bot scripts can grab the email address and add it to a spam list. Also do not sign up for any free websites or search engine/link submit websites with the email address.

When you try to send and receive e-mail, you may receive one of the following error messages:

The server could not be found. (Account:account name, POPserver:'mail', Error Number: 0x800ccc0d)

Task 'server name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800ccc0f): 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: ?'

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account. account name, Server: 'server name', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '+OK', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): N0, Error Number: 0x800ccc0f

Task 'SMTP server name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042109): 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

CAUSE

This error message occurs when Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express cannot establish a connection with your e-mail server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods as appropriate for your situation.

Confirm That Your E-Mail Server Settings Are Correct

For information about the correct settings for your e-mail server, view your welcome email.

Make sure the domain name has fully propagated. If it has not you may either connect via IP or wait for propagation to take place.

Insure you have an internet connection.

Reboot your computer.

If you are using a virus scanning program such as Norton change its settings to only scan email on send and delivery.

Close any applications that would cause an interuption in internet connectivity.

Scan and remove spyware on your system that may cause interuptions in internet connectivity.

If persists contact us.

First try restarting your computer. If the error persists try removing the mail account from your mail client, close it, and re-add it.

You will also want to make sure your Internet Service Provider is not blocking port 25 access outside their own service. By opening a shell/command prompt and typing "telnet mail.yourdomain.com 25" you should be able to reach it. If not, your ISP or firewall software you have installed is blocking your access.

When you try to send and receive messages by using Outlook Express, you are able to send messages, but you may receive the following error message when incoming messages are delivered:

Could not retrieve mail from the account A connection failure has occurred (error -23012).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of a failed response to the Authenticated Post Office Protocol (APOP) request from Outlook Express to the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) server. The failure occurs because the server is not responding in a manner that is consistent with accepted standards.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, check your internet connection. Try a reboot, if it still occurs contact us.

There are many reasons for the above error.

Make sure you are using username@yourdomain.com and not username+yourdomain.com

Try removing the account in your mail client and re-adding.

If you have an anti-virus program you may need to adjust its settings to scan on arrival and send only to avoid interuptability.

How often are you checking email? You may need to extend the period between checks.

This can occur for several reasons.

Make sure you have the proper spelling of the email address and no extra spaces.

The recipient mail server may be having problems.

If you have sent more than 150 emails in an hour this will occur. Accounts are limited to 150 emails an hour to limit spam abuse. You will want to throttle the application to 150 an hour or perform 150 at a time.

We have ensured that you have access to your email 24/7 and need nothing more than a web browser and an internet connection!

You can access your email from any internet connection simply go to http://your_domain.com/webmail and when prompted enter your email username(your complete email address) and password for that specific email address.

Replace your_domain with your actual domain name.

You will have full access to your email account and be able to both send and receive email.

This option will always be available to you even if utilizing a desktop mail client.

If you need assistance please do not hesitate to contact us and we will walk you through this process.

Title of this sub-forum:

User Contributions Browse Modules, Addons, Customisations & Templates contributed by users of WHMCS

IMO WHMCS in their lack of foresight, has choosen not to keep the license that they provided in force so the install where the community could share is now not accessible.

I suppose it falls on the fact that WHMCS is a commercial script, as it should be, and this maybe taints their insight, position, and general support of the other side or OpenSource which is what this endeavour was about.

I personally apoligize for WHMCS choosing not keep the license in effect, a matter that in final analysis is at no cost to them and had no downside for them either.

For any that happen across this and want what is available, please see the first post and I am more than willing to email this to you...Again once You validate that you currently have WHMCS Installed.

Best Wishes and Best of Luck to All
