Error upgrading from 5.3.13 to 6.01. - authentication method unknown to the client

I tried to run the upgrade process.

Visiting whmcs-path/admin gives:

Critical Error

SQLSTATE[HY000] [2054] The server requested authentication method unknown to the client

Visiting whmcs-path/install shows installation/upgrade screen (Step 1), then I'm able to proceed to Step 2 which says (btw, version shown to the right of the logo is 6.0 and not 6.0.1):

Upgrade Your Installation

We have detected that you are currently running WHMCS Version 5.3.13.

This update process will upgrade your installation to 6.0.1.

But no link to click nor the script proceeds automatically. I tried manually changing install/install.php?step=2 to install/install.php?step=3 but then it asks me for the license details and database config.

On another thread someone has had similar or exactly the same problem. One of your staff members suspected it might be due to usage of old password hashing (16 chars) rather than new (40) chars. If you also think it may be due to that problem, please let me know how should I ask my hosting support about that.
