An interesting debate, its the first time I have seen this topic but I have to say that I am completely on the side of "I feel WHMCS is perfectly priced". If I look at how many hours per week this system saves me in being able to monitor my staff alone on support issues, billing and also looking at forcasts etc it clearly pays for itself time and tie again. On top of this it pays for itself yet again in the time that I have saved in training staff to understand the more complex side of the web hosting business and all I have to do is train them to use WHMCS and ultimatley they can carry out all the everyday tasks that are required without understanding how it happens.

 

Overall I feel that WHMCS is now something my business could not be without and has turned from a "want" to a "need" in every way. It is two or three hosting customers a month to pay for itself which once you have got on board, everything else is a bonus. If I ever got anywhere near as low as just a few customers then I would be asking myself the question "why bother" and would just give it up as a bad job.

 

I have used many systems before WHMCS and this far out performs all the others by a country mile.

wow if any one complains about price I do think you should shop around.

WHMCS is more affordable than most alternatives and if you have a problem well your business model needs some work. I have been hosting sites since 1995 and can tell you one that at a few dollars a month this is affordable. What it does saves you lot in administration. The start of prices like this have added a lot of wanna bees to the business that are simple resellers and don't have clue what the servers are actually doing.

A resller is not a hosting company the rare and always will be a reseller.

If you don't ask, you don't get.

I would delete this stupid thread.

It's not stupid to ask if there's a way to reduce costs. Just because we find it affordable doesn't mean everyone does, or that it fits everyone's needs and budget.

Ran into this thread while researching an issue and have to put my two cents in here. Why? Because I think WHMCS is a wonderful piece of software, very affordable, well supported and I couldn't see running my business without it.

Personally, I think anyone that complains about the price/cost of WHMCS is either:

A: Brain Dead

B: Only has 3 hosting customers and two of those are relatives

C: Just found a web hosting template and decided to go into the hosting business

D: Software Illiterate

E: All Of The Above

 

For me, there is no other choice to date that serves me as effortlessly as WHMCS does. In over 11 years of running a professional web services business which includes hosting, design, seo, consultative services, and many other aspects of this industry, I have tried many other ways of managing my clients invoicing and billing services.

 

For me, I stay too busy and in fact am pretty much covered up with work on a regular basis. I can't afford to waste time and energy making certain my billing and invoicing system is working, keeping track of who owes what and when they owe it and making certain payments are processed smoothly and efficiently and with no hassle to the client. Clients too tend to be a fickle breed and they will complain if they don't like how my pdf invoice looks, if it is difficult to make a payment and so forth. With WHMCS I have only had one customer complaint. He didn't like how on the pdf invoice it said "UNPAID" in big red letters. On the other hand, I have had alot of customers commend me for a billing, ordering and payment system that is easy to work with.

 

Granted, there are going to be issues from time to time, bugs, things that break or don't work as promised, etc. That simply goes without saying, this is a dynamic software that is constantly being improved upon. I have to add that in the few instances where I have had an issue or problem or bug or whatever this was handled with what I consider to be excellent time and service and I get grumpy really fast if I have an issue around my money which isn't being solved quickly.

 

Surely, there are features we'd like to have which we might not have (yet I hope), features we might never need or use, and features we still don't understand how they work. But in comparison to everything else out there, and I have compared to everything else out there, I think WHMCS is simply the best there is.

 

Anyone that says it costs too much simply isn't being honest and fair in my opinion to WHMCS for what it is, what it does for you (assuming you have a viable business that actually has orders on a regular, even daily basis) and how it truly compares. Personally, I could easily afford to by the one-time license. And, I have considered it. but only for a second. In perspective, I feel that paying for the monthly lease is the only fair way to do business with WHMCS. It simply is that important of a software to my company. I felt that a one-off payment simply wasn't fair, ie it was too cheap, considering the long term use and support and benefit I am getting from the software. So in effect, by paying the monthly lease I believe I am supporting the ongoing growth of the software in a more meaningful way. Plus, I need all the tax writeoffs I can get so in this case that's another positive because if I bought the software I'd have one writeoff whereas if I didn't lease I'd be paying that $18 to the gov anyways.

 

So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

$16 (£9) you can get this with 1 or 2 good hosting packages sold.

 

a good host cannot function without such a versitile product as WHMCS, you can always just play at being a host and get a cheap alpha, master reseller or reseller account and then just use direct paypal links to take payment and have no WHMCS, but you wont last that long

I have personally been in the hosting game for over 5 years, in that time i have gone from taking payments using paypal buttons and manually creating accounts, to using modernbill which very nearly forced me out of business due to how buggy and un-reliable it was.

 

When I found WHMCS at first I was skeptical about it as had previous problems with other billing systems, however once I got it onto my dev server I knew straight away that it was different, within an hour of uploading it I had it more or less configured to my needs. All in all my first install took maybe 2 days and that was including skinning it to integrate with my site.

 

To say that WHMCS is too expensive, i would ask you to try an inferior billing system and see how you get on with that, you will have a lot of headaches and probably get no where.

Yes, you had the sense to move on, but how many dont do this and will just fail.

 

an example. in the early days when i started i found one host pricing etc looked good, site looked good, but he just used a paypal link for payment and manually set up account which took 4 days. I asked him why does he not use something like CE, WHMCS, Modernbill they an account will be set up within 24 hours, his reply was "What are these" and then within 24 hours of the account been setup i noticed some DNS problems, so i contect the host about these and he asked me what is DNS. natually after that i soon closed my account with them as it was clwear he had no idea what he was doing. i then found a host which included CE, but as clientbase grew i changed hosts and moved onto WHMCS , but after a few bad hosts i moved onto my own VPS and have WHMCS and have never looked back (wish i had done this from day 1), now i am happy where i am now, it has taken 10 years of hard work, but with a strong clientbase i cant complain

WHMCS is cheap, it only cost around $15 Dollars per month, or $250 for a life time, how cheap is that,

 

i pay around $150 per month for my phone, if you pay it one off, you have it for life and never have to pay a monly fee for it again!

I would be more than happy to pay double for WHMCS. I also agree that this is the most stupidest polls ever. If he doesn't like the software or it's price, then he can go elsewhere, Clientexec for example. It won't take him long to bump into a load of bug related issues that he will not want to deal with!.

 

Plus he needs to understand the time that has been put into developing the software, it's frequent updates and so on. $15.95 per month is nothing.

We are a company that deals heavily with non-profit organizations. So price originally was an issue. We had gotten WHMCS free with the reseller package and found it great to use. When we moved to another company they did not offer WHMCS so I am happy to say that we got our own and the $15.95 is well worth it.

There are many other billing programs but they seem to be missing one thing or another.

To me it seems that with WHMCS you get more then you pay for.

Even as a small start up surely you can not consider WHMCS as "too expensive"?

 

C'mon!

For this kind of money you are spoilt with features and automation which you could not put a price on if you looked to do it all manually.

WHMCS would be cheap at twice the price.

 

When/if your business gets rolling and the money is steadily coming in you wont even notice the payment for WHMCS. If you do think its costing you a large chunk of your profits, then perhaps you shouldn't be running your own business.

 

I dont think your gonna get many people thinking as you do OP.
