Custom variable in the From field

Using Hooks:EmailPreSend to successfully add custom variables in the body and subject of emails, but is there anyway to use them in the From field?

 

If not any other way I can intercept and edit the content for the From field? I need to show a different value there based on the Client Group of the recipient.

 

If I add a custom field there it just displays the text of the custom field name. i.e. {$customfield}
