Configuring Domain Registrars - Why does Enom charge a fee, when some other registrars dont?

I'm having difficulties deciding on how I should set up my Domain Registrars.

My host In motion recommends enom, and even shows enom for their support tutorials, however enom charges a start up fee despite my host providing one free licence for WHMCS.

Then I noticed Enom in my WHMCS domain panel, as a sponsored registrar, and provides a signup option, and within that option it advertises that its an exclusive deal for WHMCS users, normally costing $3000 at value.

So does this mean that If I sign up through my WHMCS admin account, I can use enom without the start up fee?

Lastly, Im not interested in owning or making ANY profit off of domains, I just want to provide a seamless signup experience so clients can get what they need, without me having to be chasing them around or having their domain account separated from their hosting e.c.t.

I noticed NameCheap did not mention any costs to use their API, so Im just confused as to what I would pay for the benefit of enom when I can use NameCheap's Api?

Appreciate the help/advice!

i'm unsure if you need to sign up directly with WHMCS to get the eNom account, rather than via a free WHMCS license from elsewhere... perhaps WHMCS John or someone else can confirm that either way... might be worth opening a ticket to sales to find out.

also remember that it wouldn't exactly your own account with eNom, it would be a sub-account within WHMCS' account with eNom... i'd be entitled to a free eNom account, but it's of no interest to me, so I never took up the offer as we can get cheaper pricing elsewhere.

there will be other registrars that you can use for no/little initial cost... I think the Logicboxes registrars (Resellerclub, Resell.biz and NetEarthOne) all charge a low deposit ($25?) to open an account - but that balance can be used in the registration/renewal/transfer of domains... certainly resell.biz would offer cheaper prices ($1+) for most TLDs than the eNom account... I know profit from domains is not your primary purpose here, so any registrar with a WHMCS module should act more or less the same.

just be aware of one thing - if you use a WHMCS registrar module written by WHMCS, they'll support it... which means if it's bugged, there should (eventually!) be an update for it; if you use a 3rd-party registrar module, WHMCS support won't touch it - fixing issues would be down to the third-party... though depending on the party involved, that may or may not be quicker than WHMCS updating their own modules! :)

Hi,

If you sign up for an eNom sub-account under us there is no initial fee and you can access the preferential domain prices we have negotiated with eNom for our users. All payments are still made to eNom and eNom provide all technical support directly to you.

You are not required to use the eNom/ResellerClub accounts provided by us, you could indeed pay the setup fee and go directly with your chosen registrar. Ultimately it's your decision as to whether our offer is preferable according to your own requirements.

I'm not sure that Enom is charging for the API, but you should reconsider using any of the major companies for this. They're all gouging you , pricewise. Namecheap, Godaddy, Enom. It's all the same. Take a look at the smaller sites, the ones that offer tiered systems. Personally, I've used Resell.biz for years and found my pocketbook to thank me ;)

Pricing comparison .com , just for registration.

enom : 13.95

Godaddy: 11.99

Namecheap: 10.69

Resell: 8.61

What most of these companies do is then charge a higher renewal fee than the registration fee as well.

WHMCS does provide support for resell, as it's a logicboxes setup, but there's plenty out there like this. Do some research if you're after providing domain services, don't just rely on the first one (the more popular one) out there :)
