Zisker
I have not been keeping up to date with the new versions of WHMCS, currently have 4.3. I contacted my IT guy and he told me it will be $120 to update it since it is so out of date and it requires a lot of work. Does this sound right? Does anyone know someone cheaper or a good tutorial? Thank you

Thank you Well, it took us about a year to upgrade and update and we finally moved everything over to v6.x a few weeks ago. It can be a tremendous amount of work depending on your templates and modules. In fact, since we moved over, we are still having some modules updated and part of our old templates still don't work. So, I would say, in general, that's an excellent price if it guarantees **everything** will be updated. But we moved from v5.x to v6.3.1... you are moving from v4.x which is extremely old and may need even more modifications.
brian!
i'd go along with paperweight on this - find out exactly what the $120 is, and is NOT, paying for. even WHMCS themselves would charge you $75 to do an upgrade, but i'm not sure if that is just a pure upgrade of the main software and then you're left to update the modules/templates etc youself. if you have your license directly from WHMCS, you should be able to obtain a developers license for free from them - that would allow you to have a test WHMCS installation - you could make a duplicate of your existing v4 website and your IT guy could then use that for testing during updates... that way, your main website can continue until you are sure the updated v6 version is ready to go live.

twhiting9275
$120 is a bit excessive (ok, a lot). The upgrade itself should go fine. Now, if you have a custom template, that's going to be an issue, but that's probably it at this point. All mods should be good to go. If not, then you need an alternative. grab a dev license, see if it'll be a ton of work, go from there
WHMCS Support Manager WHMCS John Posted June 10, 2016 WHMCS Support Manager Share Posted June 10, 2016 Hi, I would strongly recommend upgrading from version v4.3 to the latest v6.3.1 as we have made a number of critical security improvements since your current version was released. As some users have mentioned we offer our own professional upgrade service (which includes updating your custom template) for $74.95: http://www.whmcs.com/services/upgrade-service/ However our service does not include updating or testing modification or custom modules.
paperweight
Hi,As some users have mentioned we offer our own professional upgrade service (which includes updating your custom template) for $74.95: http://www.whmcs.com/services/upgrade-service/ However our service does not include updating or testing modification or custom modules. I didn't realize this included updating custom templates. When I updated to v6 I paid WHMCS for a template customization, but I still have many v5 template modifications that are not working well in v6 and the template mods didn't cover this service. So if I buy the $74.95 service, for example, will you assist to place all the {php} in my code into hooks to be ready for any future changes where WHMCS eliminates {php} smarty in the templates? Also, I have 2 WHMCS modules that are not working 100% since the v6 update: one is the "Limit Products/Services Purchase" module and the other is a custom server module. Both are operational on v6 but only at about 80% -- some things need to be updated with them. What type of service do you have that can assist in getting these v6 ready?
WHMCS Support Manager WHMCS John Posted June 13, 2016 WHMCS Support Manager Share Posted June 13, 2016 Hi, Regretabbly we do not offer a service which would take care of that for you.
ojexii
$120 is a bit excessive (ok, a lot). Cmon, 120 bux an hour is a pretty standard rate, secondarily got only knows what could go wrong between 4.3 to 6.x. Unless you are comparing that rate to fivver.com or a super cheap freelancer, thats mates rates.
twhiting9275
Except it doesn't take an hour to upgrade, and $120/hr is hardly 'standard'.
