Anyone have SSL on their dev version. I dont see a huge need for it but it would be nice to add it if i could.

i have site.com cert but it wont share the cert with dev.site.com, is there a trick to getting the base cert to share with dev url..

just curious if i could use a shared like this in the ssl field in admin config...

https://./~username/

Why not just move your dev site out of the sub domain into a directory? site.com/dev/

From google:

Aug 9, 2014 - Wildcard SSL certificates secures your website URL and an unlimited number of its subdomains.

for several reasons.

1. whmcs requires the dev to be dev.site.com so they can monitor it to be sure your not using it illegally. When i got my dev license i was informed it had to be placed in dev.site.com

2. cert companies are in the business to sell certs, my experience has been that even with a wildcard, they always have some excuse as to why you need to buy another one. For example, i had to buy one for domain.com, then i had to get one for hostname.domain.com because they dont cover that type of domain structure even with a wildcard. Then it would not allow me to share it so i had to get another one for my other domain.com so now i have 3 certs where i should really only have to have 1 in my mind because if you look at the actual address from dev.site.com the logical location is site.com/dev so why does that cert not work. Because cert companies want to sell another cert, and they make the rules and you cant get by without one. I should have sold certs instead of hosting i think lol..

And thats why... :)

You can just register for a free certificate at StartSSL, if you're not really going to use it for anything else than testing purposes.

I dont recommend them at all, they do the old bait and switch on you. First its a long process, they take you thru all that process, and then tell you, Oh by the way you cant use the cert for that sorry, you might want to upgrade to the class 2 (PAID NOT FREE) cert. Same ol song and dance people.

Cert companies know they have you by the huevos, so they have the advantage. Companies like this which there are many, make me sick with frustration and BS tactics to make a sale.

oh and i can do a revoke request for a mere fee of $24.95.... what a joke

Isnt the DEV folder supposed to be unavailable to the public?

thats why they tell you to password it so it wont be available

when i got mine

If not installed in a localhost environment, then the requirements are as follows:

You will install it in a password protected directory of "dev.yourdomain.com" matching the same domain name where you currently use your paid license key.

oh and easy hosting, not even a wildcard that i know of will cover dev.domain.com if i am correct. But thats what i mean they get you comming and going.

yes +1 easy hosting exactly what i was told as well.

i secured the folder via pw dir so that meets the requirement that it not be avail to the public. Chances are the cert is not going to make a huge difference. But then again i have no clue what i will be dev in the future so i would sure hate to get into a situation where the job is deadheaded because of this issue in the event i need the cert. I dont think i should have to go buy one for this. Maybe since WHMCS is so nice they might provide a solution here where they can offer us a dev ssl cert for a couple of bucks or even free just to use with our dev if we should happen to need it.

Obviously there wont be any live transactions or should i say true transactions, just test ones maybe WHMCS to and from the registrar's test environment or even a test module. But i think its something we all should consider and not just have to fork out more money all the time for stuff like this when we are trying to dev products. Its not like any of us are getting rich from making modules ya know.

WHMCS any ideas, can ya help us... maybe it could be a marketing deal for you to offer not only the free dev but a dev ssl to go with it. It does not have to be a class 2, as long as it will recognize the https:// thats all we would need.

that is what is so confusing at times EH, We buy it and they say it will cover www and not www if you do it the right way. Then they say if you get domain.com it will cover all domain.com and domain.com/sub or you can share it. But yet they dont cover sub.domain.com even when the logical location is still domain.com/sub lmao ahhhhhh its a vicious circle

Technically i should be able to share the one i have with dev.domain.com but it wont let me do that either. So again im down to poss having to purchase another cheap cert for dev.domain.com when really i dont think i should have to. And this will make over $100 a year just in cert's which is a huge expense for a small company. Especially when the pressure is on to make some kind of profit by next year for the investors. Any kind of profit at all and we can keep our doors open, so every little bit helps.

depends where you get SSL from. if you want an SSL to cover www and non www then you need to register it using the common name http://www.mydomain.

the only one i know that wont work this way is geotrust.

some will say an ssl to http://www.mydomain.com will also cover any sub domains as in http://www.dev.mydomain.com or http://www.mydomain.con/dev but they dont, for this you need a wildcard SSL. I like you was spending a small fortune on SSL certs mainly for server hostnames, then i enquired and found that getting a wildcard SSL for a single domain and then setting up all the servers under hostnames under that domain and they will all be ssl covered as they are subdomains of the main domain.

Yeah ill look into getting a wildcard sometime when i can get it authorized by the partners. For now and this is the sad and rediculous part is that even as a reseller for rapid ssl which is geotrust, my cost is not far off retail, they give us very minimal margin, so in order to get a good rate myself i have to actually go thru namecheap which is a volume seller and get it for $7.00 - $10.00 there and its the same rapid/geotrust cert i would get if i got it thru my reseller account. Its just nuts...

im thinking since it wont accept dev.domain.com under my currrent cert, that it will let me add a cert for that, well i hope so... maybe i can do it via root whm if i have to... ill just have to try i guess. .

I found with namecheap SSL certs they are good at selling and setting up at first, but they always seem to mess up all SSL renewals and bring this to Comodos attention, they just say Namecheap are one of their biggest distributors so they wont do anything to any reports made against namecheap

Hi,

We no longer require the dev licences to be installed on the dev subdomain. This is since the "Development Licence" banner was added to the bottom of the page, so you can now install it wherever you like, but I'd still recommend keeping it blocked off from public use as to prevent prying eyes.
