Hello,

I use Enom for SSL's and have found their integration to be ok.

Is this something that needs to be installed manually once a customer purchases it?

That's correct unless they use the SSL with another company, in which case that particular company would likely complete the installation.

So how does this work? If a client buys an SSL from me, do I then go buy an SSL from a company like ENOM and install it on my server for that customer?

If so, usually the SSL is validated by sending an email to the person on the whois. How would the validation work?

  • WHMCS Support Manager

WHMCS has modules that automates the selling of certificates and provides an interface for clients to provide the CSR themselves:

http://docs.whmcs.com/Enom_SSL_Certificates

http://docs.whmcs.com/GlobalSign_SSL

The verification email and CRT is sent to the address the client chooses during the configuration process.

if you use netearthone for domains (and you should since they are cheaper and have better support than enom), they also resell the alpha SSL so thats an easy way to do it. Personally I like opensrs and got them to almost match the Rapidssl price that enom offers ($12 instead of $10) and i cant wait to be rid of Enom, their support is just terrible.

John,

Thanks for the information. So in order for the SSL to be able to be configured, the customer will need a dedicated IP address. Currently I am hosting websites on a Linux Dedicated Server from Go Daddy. This means that I would have to contact Go Daddy to get a new dedicated IP, and I will need to set up the domain name for my customer to use that dedicated IP. Correct?

Thanks Again,

--Jeff

you need a separate dedicated IP for every SSL cert issued

You don't need a dedicated IP to install SSL if you know who is going to use the site (you control the environment). Most modern hosts support SNI and will let you install as many certs as you want per IP. The only problem is that it doesn't work for people using XP...

who told you this

A dedicated IP is required for an SSL certificate

some hosts may offer a shared SSL cert, but to run your own SSL you will need a Dedicated IP

well the link you gave me gives the first clue "With SNI, it's necessary to consider the configuration carefully to ensure security is maintained."

i have yet to come across any host that actually uses this and after 11 years i know quite a few. i know some server providers that will not allow this to be used on their servers.

All this means is that you have to know how to configure virtual hosts, but I would assume all web hosting company know how to do this. This is pretty recent technology, but with the lack of available IPv4 IPs, people have been begging the cPanel dev team to include this feature as soon as possible.

so what you are saying that all hosts even thoise who purchase 99p reseller plans on ebay to play at hosts would know this.

i run my own servers and i would rather not create more work for myself and use up more resources on something that has not been requested and may never be used.

i recently cancelled my rvsitebuilder licence which i have had for 5 yrs but this was never used, its the same thing.

but you ask a majority of hosts and server providers they will all say that you need a dedicated IP for an SSL as this is the normal industry practice.

Maybe they don't, but that would be the least of the problem for people using those hosts.

You're actually using less resources when using SNI because you're using less IPs. And there is zero configuration work involved when selling a hosting plan if you've got your templates right. You just stop allocating IPs to accounts that don't need one if all they need is to secure the admin side of their CMS.

This used to be the only way to do it and allowed hosts to charge a premium for additional IPs and/or SSL certs, because security sells, but today, unless you're hosting a website or a service that requires SSL and compatibility with ancient or mobile configurations, you don't need a dedicated IP any more.

i agree with, Yes a dedicated IP is required in order to install an SSL cert.

Which is an inaccurate statement since it has been proved earlier in this thread that you can install SSL certs without a dedicated IP. It may be your preferred mode of operation or you may have to use one because of a specific business case, but it's not a requirement.

strange how if you looks on all hosting forums and ask any server/SSL providers they will all say a dedicated IP is required for an SSL.

Not so strange, no that the information found on large companies' website is outdated. As for the forums, I think you'll find that people on WHT have known about this for a long time. And if you know only of cPanel, then you'll find that other control panel do support SNI to offer more flexibility to hosting providers.
