Do you get fraud orders with phone verification?

Never had a fraud order through the various phone verification places however we have had people not able to PLACE an order as the verification doesn't work, or they get double charged for whatever reason.

We sill have our accounts with Varlogix and DialVerify for use on some other sites, however for the hosting and dedicated servers we stick with manual verification via phone.

I have actually lost quite a few customers this way! As some people don't enter their real phone number, and they therefor don't get the phone call!

And when they don't want to provide their phone number! Then there is not much to do ....

Why would you want to do business with people that provide fake information? Also, all you have to do is have a disclaimer on the contact information page of the order process that explains what information is needed and why.

maxmind uses telesign, so why not just use maxmind so you get both services?

i did not know this but

what do you mean by "both services"?

the only thing i do not like about maxmind that it calls the customer right after he clicks the continue button when finishing the signup form , unlike varilogix which tells you exactly what will happen and then you have to click a button to call your phone number.

as i understand telesign is working on something similar to varilogix .

and telesign charge you for successfull calls only and not every call.

so i guess i will have to wait about 2 weeks with my decition to see if any progress made with telesign.

thanks again to all !

The Maxmind phone verification isn't as good as Varilogix though.

Agree 100% with you chickendippers, but I do use MaxMind at this time for MaxMind MiniFraud and Telephone verification. I want the two level protection at this time. I have been with Varilogix since James started the company so I get a great rate and AFIS for free and would love to see Vailogix AFIS included in the fraud package with WHMCS.

Even though sometimes MaxMind call back fails real customers call back and you can always set them back to pending.

I really don't know how you guys do this. I have been providing webhosting for about 1 year and yes i do get fraud orders maybe 1-2 in 2-3 weeks but thats it! I dont even have max mind enabled nothing really no fraud protection. And some people tell me they have all of these verification processes and they still get fraud orders.

I would say that's high. Getting fraud orders is one thing.....getting caught out by them and having charge backs against you and your merchant account provider giving you grief while you lose money is another.

We still get fraud orders......but they are a lot less than we used to get, now that we use maxmind and phone verification. We've never had a chargeback or fraud order go through and we can get on with life relaxing just a little bit more knowing that maxmind is doing a job for us. Peace of mind.

Go back to doing it manually again? no way!!!! lol

I just thank Matt for the deal WHMCS has with maxmind

  • 4 weeks later...

I just signed up with Telesign and my account got activated 2 days later.

I like the fact that you only get charged 0.20$ per successful call made (So I don't get charged for all the frauds.. I only get charged for legitimate customers), no monthly fees, no setup fees etc ! Sounds fantastic !

Howerver I am wondering if it's effective. I mean what if the fraudster puts in his phone number and enters the pin correctly. Then what ? He gets through the order and spams for couple of hours until we stop him ? + we get charged for chaargebacks ! I mean What good is it to me to have a nigerian phone number? I'll never be able to go after them and I don't have the time to file a lawsuit etc.. Correct ?

Change of topic.. Do you think it's a good idea to warn the customers that you do phone verification right before they place their order ? Does it discourage fraudsters or does it prepare them to use a number they can use ?

:)

We warn our customers - for the most part it does discourage quite a few would be fraud accounts - but there are those that are quite brazen. Not warning the customer that you do a callback can lead to a suprise phone call, or a call being placed to a HOME number when they're at WORK. It's a courtesy to notify them really.

Handsonwebhosting: You are right! I beleive it is important to warn your customer so that they know that they should expect a call and enter a reachable number !! :)

Joe123: I just checked if there was a problem and place a demo order.. I got the following message:

There was a problem with the phone verification service and your order could not be validated. Please try again later.

I wonder if I left a space as well or if it's a problem from Telesign's side ..

We gave up on telephone verification as it caused more problems than it solved with legitimate people abandoning orders.

Also 070 numbers look like mobile phone numbers, but can actually be easily redirected to any number anywhere in the world which is a common fraudster technique used and maxminds call check just dials them right up.

I mentioned it to maxmind and they said they would look into it and let me know what they were going to do and that was about 10 months ago!
