OzNick
Hi Everyone, I have tried several times but installation keeps failing after step 5 of installation (WHMCS 7.3). Has anyone had an issue at this stage of installation? I have also tried running install again to invoke the upgrade script but it fails again with tblupdatehistory already exists. I am stumped! I am on Windows Server 2012, Microsoft Azure VM. Thanks in advance! OzNick
WHMCS ChrisD
Hey @OzNick Whilst Windows is not one of our tested or supported platforms it should still run, when you re-ran the install script did your completely empty the database and then re run the install script?
OzNick
Hi Chris Yes I have done that several times. Still breaks at step 5. I have updated a ticket with database info and install url. Hope we can get this working.
OzNick
OK.... Turns out the issue was FastCGi with a low timeout setting. Increased that in IIS and the install finished. Next, I got a Connection Error which turned out to be an issue with the installed cacert.pem being out of sync. Once that file was replaced everything went smoothly. Well, during the digging for the connection error there was a suggestion that there was a PHP issue so I changed the version from 5.X to 7.1X and ran into another ionCube problem which, thankfully only took a short time to resolve. Finally I can get on with setting up the system and get it talking to Plesk Onyx, TPP Wholesale etc...

And really Chris, it is now 2017 and Windows hosting has been around for ages. To state that Windows is not one you test on or support might be an error on WHMCS part. Surely by now the value of all types of hosting environments is an important consideration when producing and improving a product such as this. There should be better support. I found the the installation klunky at best. I would hate to think about the business you are losing from people who are just beginning in the Web Host space. Other environments such as Windows based configurations may experience compatibility issues and are not supported.

I get the *nix community is stuck in the dark ages. My point was simply that in an environment where there are multiple successful (nix, Windows etc) hosting environments then a company as WHMCS, who have a wonderful product, should aim to create seemless installs for all environments. I suspect that WHMCS just don't want to stretch their development/testing/support resources to cover Windows options too - there are enough bugs/flaws in the software going unfixed without complicating the development/testing process by having to support Windows too.
OzNick
Maybe if I get the time I will try and create a blow by blow experience of what I had to go through to get it all working. I think the only thing I am left to complete is the CRON (scheduled task) jobs, and of course setting up my services. Cheers!

You're seeing this as some sort of an oversight on the part of WHMCS, when the lack of current Windows support is actually deliberate policy. They used to support Windows and at some point in the last several years took a decision to cease doing so. It should still work at the moment, does for us, but don't be surprised if you can't get any help with more complex problems as you go on. We own our own equipment and so can't readily switch our WHMCS server to *nix on their whim, but for sure if I was starting out I wouldn't choose a Windows box for WHMCS, as sooner or later you're going to come up against something that doesn't work and you'll be completely on your own. OzNick
Thanks malfunction I guess my post was born of frustration more than anything. I have WHMCS running on my Windows Server environment quite well but as is typically the case there is a lot more work to do than just double clicking an msi package in windows. I've been in and around this industry since 2000 so I understand your comment about this space being crowded. But that can be a good thing too. If it wasn't, there would be little to no need for a system like this. Cheers
