Difference between $days_until_expiry and $domain_days_until_expiry?

The title says it all. I'm working on a custom "Upcoming Domain Renewal Notice" email template and I can't tell exactly what is going on with these two variables.

I think the first is used on the emails sent on the 11th of each month; the second is used when its triggered by the domain reminder settings in the automation settings.

What's the point of sending this template on 11th of each month? Why not on the exact date before the domain renewal as set in the Automation Settings?

 

In my system 60-day and 30-day renewal reminders are sent on 11th instead of 60 and 30 days before the domain expiry. This is a bit confusing and the dates do not match in client's email.

The idea behind the grouped reminders is that if a client has multiple domains expiring in the same month, they only receive one email for them all instead of being inundated with an individual email for each domain.
