Pima
Cheapest to get started? Or cheapest after for the services? For example: One is no setup Fee but std domains are about $9.45 Another has a stiff upfront setup fee but then domains are about $6.49
dannygoh
My budget is USD500 for upfront fees and cheapest domain available.

Pima
who is the registrar which provides domains for $6.49 ??? My bad - old info Registrars must pay Verisign $6.42 for each .com domain plus $0.20 cents to ICANN. So the lowest is $6.62 for an accredited provider.

9DollarDomains
Registrars must pay Verisign $6.42 for each .com domain plus $0.20 cents to ICANN.AFAIK, this is correct. There are business's that do registrations for nearly no profit though - they offer domains as a loss-leader, or make their money from other things instead. ------------------------------------------ http://RegistrationsOnly.com - Domains from $6.99
tldagent
Hello, I'm looking for the cheapest domain reseller. Any recommendation? The cheapest isn't always the best route and this can be verified by asking any of the 300,000 Registerfly customers that completely lost their domain names because they wanted the cheapest domain names. AFAIK, this is correct. There are business's that do registrations for nearly no profit though - they offer domains as a loss-leader, or make their money from other things instead. True. If you are selling domains at a loss, as it seems, then how do you afford to stay in business? I visited your site, that's why I'm asking. When it comes to domains and ones connection to the internet they better be darn sure whoever is registering those domain names is on the up and up. Anyone can become a reseller and likewise anyone can steal domain names so I'd go with the most trustworthy Registrar and not the cheapest.
chickendippers
Nothing wrong with a loss leader, it's a well-established and potentially very successful marketing technique.

So the lowest is $6.62 for an accredited provider. And ~$65,000/year in ICANN membership/regular fees, software licences, hardware costs/colo/bandwidth for the whois services, filing/escrow costs ... Plus bank charges, admin fees, shared staffing costs, taxes .... Additionally there's the travel/hotel/whatever costs of attending the meetings (assuming you want to deal with a registrar who takes and interest in how t'interwebbything is actually managed and run) ... Basically unless you're doing millions of them, are fully automated, providing no/sh!t support, and only employ robots, domains *cost* from $8 (600,000+) upwards - we've guestimated it to be $14 each at 38,000 registrations. The better the registrars support , staff, platform, service, the higher that number goes - highly important - the domain is *THE* most critical item in your online identity - if that doesnt work no amount of SEO, Flash Website, Marketing or Fancy Product matters diddly-squat Of course those trying to look artificially cheap quote their figures without the icann fees or without the bank/processing charges, or without any dns, or ... all smacks of *** to me - which makes it difficult to compare like-for-like ...

Not out to create a "flame" here but it really depends upon ones strategy. If your intent is to make money from registrations, then so be it. On the other hand if this is to you as it is for many of the large registrars, a service to attract users to then sell other services then this is a whole other matter One can sell say 1,000 and net $3-4 per - - or sell 10,000 and net $1 per and in the offing also sell domain privacy, email, hosting, etc
othellotech
The rounded numbers I posted were related to a domain service being run at cost/break-even as an actual registry/registrar rather than as a loss-leader for other services or as a reseller of someone else.
easyhosting
No one really makes money/profit from domains, the money/profit is made from hosting. example. you pay $10 a month for your reseller account, so you sell 5 hosting packages at $5 a month (gives a profit of $15 a month) You have a domain reseller account and purchase domains at $6.49, so you sell these to your clients for $6.50 (gives a $0.01 profit) so each of your clients who ordered the hosting required a domain so your outlay for the 5 as above is $42.45, but your 1st months income is $57.50 a profit of $15.05 then $15 a month after that 12 months = $152.45 outlay with $332.50 income giving you an annual income of $180.05 and this is just off 5 packages, so you dont need profit from domains
tldagent
Sure. However, take a look at Register.com They've made a business on profiting from domain names every which way. I'd feel guilty charging $35.00 for a .com but there are some who do and can. Still, looking for cheap has never really worked. You'd think by now people would figure out that you get what you pay for... in every aspect of every part of life, including domain names and hosting.
easyhosting
I Personally use namecheap.com and 123-reg.co.uk for my domains. Namecheap.com has an API to use with WHMCS. Normally a .com domain will cost $5 to $15. Going direct to enom a .com domain will only cost a max. $10.95
