Hey hosts,

Being the MD of a UK host my self, it have come to my attention that alot of smaller host dont actually backup offsite; or in some cases backup in the same server on a diff HD.

Would any host be interested in backup solutions with packages designed especially for us; the host? Obviously offering the following services: SFTP, large storage, fast upload/dl, unlimited transfer etc?

Would just be interested in knowing what you guys feel, as i wouldnt mind starting to offer backup solutions and services.

Let me know what you think guys and gals.

Tim

I don't think its a big enough market for it. If the host can't get backups done by their datacenter or host - then they probably might not be able to afford a backup system (as if they are a reseller). Of course it can depend on how much your charging and how much people are willing to pay for backups.

But as you can see from a lot of replies here, it probably won't work out very well.

One of the issues that you will run into with regards to offering a backup solution to other people is that bandwidth will get eaten up. Most datacenters offer the ability to backup between machines and not affect paid for transfer. Some data centers (the planet) offer offsite backups also with fast direct connections as if you were going between two machines in one rack.

A buddy of mine runs a backup company - http://www.edatashield.com - backs up both hosting accounts and also desktop computers. It's a tough business to be in - partly because you're selling a product people SHOULD have but not something that people WANT.

People don't think about backups until they need it - when someone pays for something they want to see instant results - the fact that the backups are likely not to get used that often seems to be something that people ignore all together!
