What are the advantages of buying the license straight from WHMCS? Should resellers be telling customers about the disadvantages of not buying it straight from WHMCS?

Go with WHMCS directly.

The support from WHMCS is , well, from WHMCS, not a third party source

You will have quicker access to the downloads, as resellers can take time when it comes to uploading those

You'll be able to get a developers license to test your install

if you get from resellers or WHMCS directly, support will be provided by WHMCS, cost with resellers can very cheap and with some resellers/providers the license offer free when you purchase one of their services.

Development and Beta licenses is available to direct WHMCS license holders.

If you don't require a unbranded license (no WHMCS link) then it would depend on your budget, if you've just started there's nothing wrong with using your free license. Further down the line it is always worth the investment to remove the link.

The other advantage of getting the license directly from WHMCS is that you get a free eNom resellers account. What you save there may more than make up the cost of the license directly from WHMCS. You probably won't get that when you use a license from a reseller or your host, at least I didn't.
