If it were nameservers, the site couldn't be found. 404 means the site was found, but the page wasn't. It may be one of 2 things:

  • Not named as expected (capital letters vs lower, wrong extension)
  • Not located where it was supposed to be found

Check the file/page name, check the link to the page, check where the user uploaded his files to.

thanks for the ideas.....

on talking to the client some more he said his website bowlsni.co.uk -

"I have been unable to update the site as I can no longer access the sitebuilder on c/panel. the message "the webpage cannot be found" http 404 occurs"

so it seems its just when he tries to access the cpanel?

does this make sense???

No idea what product you'd been using, but here's one: http://www.swsoft.com/sitebuilder

They don't show pricing (contact for pricing) or installation instructions, but offer a download, which I presume to be a demo that has installation instructions in it.

[edit]

I stand corrected, they do show pricing.
