m8internet
This is an issue with the server you are using, nothing to do with WHMCS Search "authentication error SMTP" on google There is a setting you need to change when using an external mail client with SMTP server Some of my clients have started reporting this, and now added an article to my Knowledgebase : Tools -> Account Select the account -> Properties > Server Tab Under the OutgoingMail Server section check the box My server requires authentication and click the Settings, select Use same settings as my incoming mailserver

I'd probably check your email server logs to see whats happening. Its possible that google locked the account and you need to reset the password. What settings do you have configured in WHMCS for sending the email?

tortilla
I've tried all the above combos and keep getting the same error. Like dhblewis it just stopped working one day for no reason and hasn't come back. Even tried setting up Mandrill but getting the same error. Any ideas?

I'm having the same issue and just can't seem to get it working with any settings. Have even spoken to Google Apps support to confirm the SMTP server settings but still settings the Could not authenticate error.

benyoungenterprises
This problem happens with my 2 WHMCS system. And i dont have any idea to solve this. I *HAD* it working the day after I posted on here, then a few days later its buggered up again and I've not been able to fix it. Think i'm going to have to move away from Google Apps as this is just ridiculous.

riship316
This did it for us - Many thanks! If you changed the Firewall rules to only allow 25, what did you put as the out going port on WHMCS >> Mail Settings ?
pagehosting4u
If you changed the Firewall rules to only allow 25, what did you put as the out going port on WHMCS >> Mail Settings ? The setting in CSF is actually ports to block and not ports to allow. Hope that clears up the confusion.

Verztech
I was facing same problem. Emails were not delivering via Gmail SMTP, I have tested everything CSF was fine, I was able to send emails through SMTP via a WordPress plugin to my WordPress blog hosted on same server but not through WHMCS. I tried everything by disabling CSF, by removing cPanel's smtp restrictions and whatever I can do but it was not working for me. However I just re-write the password again although it was saved already but after doing this it has started working.
sammyboy
I was facing same problem. Emails were not delivering via Gmail SMTP, I have tested everything CSF was fine, I was able to send emails through SMTP via a WordPress plugin to my WordPress blog hosted on same server but not through WHMCS. I tried everything by disabling CSF, by removing cPanel's smtp restrictions and whatever I can do but it was not working for me. However I just re-write the password again although it was saved already but after doing this it has started working. Apologies for reviving an old thread, but I too was having all sorts of headache with this. When trying to set up email via whmcs i kept getting the following error: Email Sending Failed - SMTP Error: Could not authenticate. My Hosting provider confirmed that CSF had nothing to do with this and that the ports were not blocked. I eventually contacted google support and they told me to: -go to admin.google.com, -then ‘Security (Click 'More Controls' at the bottom if you don't see it). -next, go to ‘Basic settings.' -and then Go to ‘Settings for less secure apps.’ -Select the option ‘Enforce access to less secure apps for all users.’ -Save changes. The reason for this is because you’re allowing a non Google product access to your account’s information. Following those steps resolved my issues instantly and the whmcs activity log showed that emails were being sent
