Is it possible and safe to setup production installation and dev installation to connect to same server?

I have my dev installation   and wondering   if i could  setup it to connect to my main server for testing purposes.

Does VPS server accept 2 connections at once?

It could cause a mess  if 2 admin   have controls

Sure, it will work. I have customers with multiple brands/WHMCS provisioning services on the same servers.

It works, but it's not advisable.
On production environment you should have a number of different protection measures (firewalling, IP filtering, 2FA etc.) which would be annoying and time-consuming in dev environment...

Beside this, in dev you should also test server-level operations (i.e. OS update, PHP update etc.) which you can't do freely if you're in production environment.

At last: it may be confusing. If the system is the same, it may happen that you wrongly operate on production, instead that on dev...
