WHMCS won't sent emails through Gmail - Google Business Apps

I have been having issues for some time now with being able to use my business email at Google with WHMCS. The most common error is the following.

Someone just tried to sign in to your Google Account support@mysite.com from an app that doesn't meet modern security standards.

Is there a reason WHMCS doesn't support modern security standards? I have used both SMTP with port 465 and SSL and port 587 with TLS. When I use port 465 I get a failed to authenticate and when I use port 587 I get the error above from Google.

Is there a reason WHMCS has issues with connecting to Gmail?

Thanks,

I am running PHP 5.4.44. The firewall is CSF, the ports 465 and 587 are open. I can use any email system other than Google. I can use Yahoo, Microsoft Office, server email, but Google says that the software I am using doesn't meet modern security standards. I am not saying that, Google is. I have submitted a ticket with WHMCS but I haven't heard back yet.

Now again, when I use port 465 and SSL I get the message "Email Sending Failed - SMTP Error: Could not authenticate." and when I use port 587 with TLS WHMCS says the same thing, but Google also sends and email with the following message. "Someone just tried to sign in to your Google Account support@mysite.com from an app that doesn't meet modern security standards."

I am running WHMCS Version: 5.3.14. I have not updated yet because I can't find the incremental updates between 5.3.14 and 6. Again, not much help from WHMCS on this either. I was hoping that upgrading might resolve the issue, doubt it, but I have to try.

enable access to less secure apps from https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

Try enabling “Access for less secure apps” in the source account (which just means the client/app doesn’t use OAuth 2.0 - https://productforums.google.com/d/topic/gmail/LhWVrYZc_Eo/discussion) in the account settings on the Security tab, Account permissions (not available to accounts with 2-step verification enabled): https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

Thanks for the help. I did allow Google to accept less secure apps and it works perfectly. Would be nice if the software I pay for used more secure options. Just seems it would be better than having to lower security settings to use Gmail and WHMCS together.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame WHMCS here. There's a lot of problems with the software, but Google's pretty generic about this whole "less secure apps" thing. What makes it "less secure"? Nobody knows, except Google.

Best I can tell, there's no "less secure" about the way WHMCS handles mail. It's got TLS, SSL, pretty much the industry standard. Google's just trying to force everyone else to use another standard, like always

I understand the issue comes from Google. Google always wants things done their way. I guess my issue is that there are more secure ways to connect to Google Business Apps. I use a variety of software, and some are free, and some are paid. WHMCS is the only paid software I use for business that doesn't use OAuth 2.0 authentication, while several free and open source software does. I guess I am more interested in why WHMCS doesn't use it.

I haven't had any issues since I enabled access for less secure apps. I do appreciate everyone that offered solutions and helped resolve the email issue.

I am still looking for the updates from 5.3.14 to 6.0. Are they anywhere to be downloaded? I know there was an update between these versions, but it has been removed from the downloads. The updates start at 602 to 603. I need to get to 602 first.

why? is there any reason why you can't go straight from v5.3.14 to v6.3.1 ??

the earliest full version I can see in the main download site is v6.0.4 - were you thinking of downloading an early v6 version and then using incremental updates to bring it up to v6.3.1 ? it would be quicker to upgrade straight to v6.3.1 and miss out all those updates... if they still apply, they'll be included in the latest full version anyway.

you might be able to find the files you want on the members downloads site, but most of them aren't labelled - so you'll have to count backwards (top->bottom) from the latest release to get the version you want. :)
