Fed up with Google

We have just placed the following announcement on our web site. So totally not satisfied with this company.

Google Checkout

We no longer accept Google checkout payments. Existing clients using this function will need to use another payment method. (You can now do a direct credit card payment from almost anywhere in the world.)

Due to the confusing nature of Google's Wallet use whereas each support person at Google tells you something different, we have decided that since they cannot decide we will have to do it for them. Google can not make up it's mind whether a Hosting Service is considered an internet service and eligble for the use of Google Wallet digital or is just a plain service related entity. It seems, based on the look of the API that one would have to use, it is highly un user friendly and very confusing. So in order to keep it simple for our clients we have decided to forgo Google entirely.

Sorry for any inconvenience they may cause you.

Hello Terry,

Please forgive me for the slow response. We’ve received a lot of questions related to the Checkout retirement announcement. Thanks for your patience.

I understand that you want to know if web hosting is accepted by Google Wallet for digital goods (GWDG). Since it is a physical good, web hosting can't be associated with GWDG. Also, since Google Checkout is retiring on November 20, 2013 and we're not accepting new account as of May 20, 2013, I suggest that you contact one of our three solutions provider partner which is Braintree. You can reach them using this number : 1-877-434-2894, or visit them at their website at support@braintreepayments.com.

Thank you again for your patience. If you have further questions, feel free to call my team at 1-855-WALLET-6.

Best,

Eric

Hello Terry,

I understand that web hosting is a service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web. But as per Google, it is a service that is tagged as a physical service.

Sincerely,

Eric

Hello Terry,

Google Wallet can no longer be used to sell physical goods. We have no replacement for that, instead Braintree would help you as a solution provider for your business. Please refer to this link https://support.google.com/checkout/.../3080449?hl=en for additional information.

Sincerely,

Eric

Is Google offering a replacement product?

No, Google is not offering a replacement processing solution for physical goods and services. We’ve partnered with three premier players in the payments industry to offer alternatives for your eCommerce needs. The links below will guide you to more detailed information about each offering, including negotiated discounts for Checkout users:

Payment Processing: Braintree Payments

Hosted storefront: Shopify

Email invoicing: Freshbooks

We recognize this transition may be difficult; it impacts you and your business. We’re committed to helping you with a smooth transition. While we are unable to offer a direct replacement for Google Checkout, we are continuing to invest in a variety of exciting new payments products to meet real world needs for both buyers and sellers. You can learn more about our recently launched payments products below:

Google Wallet Instant Buy: Quick and easy payments on mobile, desktop, and in-app

Google Wallet Objects: Digital commercial objects and stronger third party issuer-consumer relationships

I had spoken to someone by the name with Sally at Google support and was told to change my settings to internet service. So I did. About 24 hours later I received a message that hosting was not considered as internet services. Again called support and given to three different people. All gave me a different answer to the same question. My point is that at that time their own employees were just as confused as I was, so I have decided to stay clear of Google.

Did look into the services that they recommended and have a strange feeling about them so we decided to go with Stripe. So far so good.

(Personally have not even used google search since they introduced google chrome. I did not like their terms and agreements as to forgoing my right to privacy)

Can't say I'm the happiest with Google right now either. We've just made the switch to Stripe for credit card / debit card processing today, and it appears to be a popular option among our customers over Google Checkout. The rates match up with Google's and PayPal's, so it's perfect for any hosting business.

  • 3 weeks later...

I would like to know how anybody can consider hosting as a physical sale. The client does not buy, but leases webspace, they do not receive anything physical, they do not own the server space, it is an intangible service as there is no delivery. It strikes me as there is actually something else going on over at google, I'm just guessing here but maybe they are pushing into the hosting industry and that might be the reason behind their lack of support for hosting services, i guess time will reveal all or not.

So I asked this of Google

looking at a forum i found this

"According to Alice at Google ( 1 855 WALLET6 ) when you sign up here: http://www.google.com/wallet/business/ you'll be taken to the API info page. On that page select Digital Goods. Fill out form and select Internet, Network, and Digital Media -- don't select Services -- as Primary product type. You can now sell web hosting and domain registration"

so is this a way to sell web hosting using Google Wallet " and i got this long reply

Hello Terry,

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that a merchant from an online blog gave out information that you can sign up for Google Wallet for Digital Goods and be able to sell web hosting. However, web hosting is classified here in Google that it is a type of a service that we can no longer support give that Google Checkout is retiring on November 20, 2013. If ever a merchant found a way to set up an account to sell web hosting using Google Wallet for Digital Goods, please be informed that Google is constantly reviewing our merchant accounts, and once it is reviewed, the account will then be suspended and further closed by Google. I understand if you still want to try to setup a merchant account using Google Wallet for Digital Goods, however we strongly don't recommend it to any of our existing Google Checkout merchants selling web hosting.

We appreciate your understanding.

Sincerely,

Eric

So the bottom line is, hosting companies can vacate the arena, i still feel there is something much bigger going along behind the scenes. i guess it will show in good time.

I thinks its just Google streamlining their business. They are also discontinuing their iGoogle search engine in November 2013.

This is just like Microsoft stopping MSN/Live chat in favour of their acquired Skype along with other parts of MS

Good provides some good services but they are known to bail of services which is a shame. I tried to sign-up with Google Checkout a couple of months ago but I believe they wouldn't allow accounts in USD if the company is registered in the UK.

I currently offer gocardless for direct debits, 2cchekout for card payments and for clients that prefer to pay by bank transfers i offer standing order to automate and bank transfer for manual payments.

I have to say it is a shame there doesn't seem to be a solution out there that offers a range of options for our industry it would make things much simpler.

I think if there was one gateway that offered a range of options such as direct debit, standing order, card payments and even manual payments and have all this available through a frame to load onsite then that company would be a very appealing prospect.
