Broken / empty image always shows in emails sent from templates

Emails sent from templates are displaying an empty image at the top of all messages. This creates about 3 line breaks of unwanted empty space at the top of all template messages. I've tried disabling the logo in General Settings by leaving the Logo URL field blank. I also tried using a spacer.gif image but I get a similar result.

When viewing the messages in Gmail, the blank image shows at the very top of messages as an empty box with a 1px border that is the width of the company URL. The source code for this portion of the email is:

<p><a href="http://mydomain.com" target="_blank"><img src="" alt="My Company Name" border="0" /></a></p>

Also, in some email clients the message preview text shows as:

[image: Company Name] The actual first line of the email is here.

I need to find a fix to prevent the templates from including this blank image. The line breaks and/or empty box at the top of every email is unwanted and creates problems when trying to design a fancy HTML template.

Has anyone else run into this or found a way around it?
