License issue with redirects

s2rcouk

Question

I'm currently trialling WHMCS and have hit a snag:

My current setup is that I have several related domains across several servers, which are used for the name servers on those servers. However when accessing these domains via the web they redirect to another domain (a .co.uk) that doesn't have it's own web space. This is basically to ensure that all visitor traffic goes to the one domain, including search engine traffic to prevent duplicate content penalties. The problem is that the license I was issued is tied to the domain linked to the web space that the software has been uploaded to, rather than the final destination domain. This means that I get an invalid license error when redirected through.

I have tried to reissue the license, to see if I can get it applied to the destination domain, however the reissue license button is absent from my client area (presumably because it's on a trial license).

What I need to know is if I purchase this software will I be able to get it to work with my setup - pointing to the non-hosted domain if necessary, or will it only work with the license pointing to the domain that it is uploaded to? If it will work with my existing setup, is it possible to get the trial license changed so that it points to the non-hosted/destination domain so that I can continue to test the trial without needing to the way my domains work?

Cheers,

David

So what exactly is your requirement, two valid domains? two valid IPs? or something else? Remember license restrictions only affect the admin area so the client area can be accessed on as many different domains, say if you have various parked domains without any license issues.

Hi, thanks for the reply. If it'll work with it, just with it licensed to the final destination domain.

What I have are 2 .coms on different servers which are used as name servers on those servers. I also have 2 .co.uks (one hyphenated, one not) parked on the hosting account for one of those .coms on one of the servers with all web traffic for all 4 domains redirected to the www.domain-name.co.uk version. The redirection works on the admin area of WHMCS too, redirecting it from domainname.com/support/admin/ to www.domain-name.co.uk/support/admin/.

I need the license to recognise just that destination domain, even though the software is installed on one of the others.

Thanks also to trine for your reply.

I am not sure if I am doing the right thing by bumping up this thread, but I got to it by doing a google search for exactly the same thing- make the whmcs clients' area available on several parked domains.

I have domain1.com physically hosting whmcs, but would like the clients interface (especially the support ticket system) to be available on many different external sites that are parked on top of domain1.com. I can live with having the admin interface run only on one site.

If anyone has worked this out, could they please share the exact steps? This will be a real boon.

Thanks,

Meeven

"parked" in this context being the cpanel/whm feature of showing the same site for multiple domains ?

in which case theres nothing for you to do, the software is instaled on the "real" domain, the others are just "serveralias" in the httpd conf - it just "works" :D

My current setup is that I have several related domains across several servers, which are used for the name servers on those servers.

Namservers are irrelevant to the issue..

However when accessing these domains via the web they redirect to another domain (a .co.uk)

So you have "domain2" which is only used for the nameservers for "server2", and when someone tries to access http://www.domain2

you redirect them to your actual site - that all makes sense

And then

(a .co.uk) that doesn't have it's own web space.

You cant show something which doesnt have webspace :P

You should be 302'ing domain2 to your actual URL

The problem is that the license I was issued is tied to the domain linked to the web space that the software has been uploaded to, rather than the final destination domain

If the "final destination" isnt where the web-space is located, you need to go back to the drawing board on what you're looking to achieve as its nonsensical.

What I need to know is if I purchase this software will I be able to get it to work with my setup

Very unlikely as the setup itself is flawed.

Unfortunately, no. In my case the parked domains are web sites independent of the main domain. I have a CMS codebase installed on the main domain which allows me to run multiple, independent websites by parking the other domains on top of the domain in which the codebase is installed. All I need is different databases for each site and a separate settings.php.

My WHMCS is installed along with the CMS codebase. So, I am basically looking for the same kind of ability to run the clients' area on different sites. I am fine with using the admin area on the main site.

Is this possible?

Thanks.

No, if you want to be using a seperate database, then you need completely seperate installations.

Actually, I said that in the context of the CMS. Does this mean that I can run the whmcs clients area on multiple sites if I use table prefixes? I am not getting how whmcs can be made to point to multiple, independent domains.

To confirm, you need one license per installation. One license is valid on one domain only. Wowever , the client area section of WHMCS can be viewed from multiple different domains if those domains are parked on the main account. All will use the same database though, look the same, and all emails sent will link to the system url which will be the main domain WHMCS is installed on.

About:

You actually won't have to have it look the same way, since you could actually have the pointers from the different sites to the clientarea to use different templates, such as:

http://demo.whmcs.com/index.php?systpl=comingfromdomainone

Back up the train here....

You are afraid of getting penalized for duplicate content... Why not handle it the way Google recommends you handle it...

Google says you should have one domain that holds the content and all other domains should use a 301 redirect to forward to that one main domain. Doing it ANY other way is sure to get yourself penalized.

Google will see http://demo.whmcs.com/index.php and http://demo.whmcs.com/index.php?systpl=comingfromdomainone as 2 different pages on the same site that have the exact same content. You will get penalized for it. Even worse will be having 2 totally separate domains loading the same content.
