Do Not Renew vs Disable Auto Renew

We are migrating to WHMCS from a custom billing/management system. We have a lot of clients that renew domains on or around the expiration dates (manual renewals), we also have a lot of clients that use an auto renewal option (auto renewals). Sometimes, clients tell us that they will not be renewing a domain, and to let it expire, so we also have a "Do Not Renew" option in the system. The "Do Not Renew" option cancels all invoices and reminder emails for the domain, so that the client no longer gets any notices for the domain, and it expires and goes away.

In the domain admin area in WHMCS, there is a "Do Not Renew" checkbox that is synced up with the "Disable/Enable Auto Renew" button in the client domain management area. The problem is - "Do Not Renew" does not mean the same thing as "Do Not Auto Renew". I can fix the text in the template, but I have a few questions:

How does WHMCS handle notices and invoices when "Do Not Renew" is enabled?

Are invoices only generated for domains set to Auto Renew?

Do Renewal Notices go out if the Auto Renew option is disabled?

Is there any option for suppressing domain renewal notices?

I agree completely. We got tired of hearing "Why am I still getting renewal reminders when I've disabled auto-renew?", so we now update the auto-renew disabled domains to a status of Canceled now so they don't get notices. But then people were wondering why they couldn't manually renew any longer.

Seems like the customer should have two options:

1. Do not renew (at all) - set the domain to a new status of "Do not renew", but allow the customer to change his mind and set it back to "Active".

2. Do not auto-renew - customer will renew manually, doesn't want it automatically done, but isn't allowing the domain to expire either.
