Registerfly Scandal

A registrar that goes by the name of RegisterFly is in trouble.

The lawsuit spells out the problems.

A lawsuit has been filed by one shareholder against the other. The lawsuit requests that Mr. Kevin Medina, who is allegedly the problematic shareholder and key employee, be barred from access to Registerfly’s servers and bank accounts. To see the text of the lawsuit, please click here.

There's lots of dicey allegations.

The lawsuit alleges that Mr. Medina has misappropriated substantial funds from Registerfly to pay for such things as personal escort services and liposuction. The suit also states the misappropriation of funds has virtually brought Registerfly to its knees — leaving it with insufficient funds to pay VeriSign and other registries, for new domain name registrations and renewals.

And system problems to boot.

As if all of the above isn’t bad enough, Registerfly customers aren't able to maintain their accounts and the remaining management may not have full access to Registerfly's servers. The following message was posted on a Web site (http://www.registerflies.com) put up by frustrated Registerfly customers:

"Attention everyone. I just received confirmation that the Registerfly site has currently been hacked into and taken over by Kevin Medina in the Florida office. I was asked to put this up here due to the amount of customers that are sending money. At this moment, they are trying to get police in Florida to arrest Kevin immediately.

I'm relaying a message that they have asked me to put up on here. They have lost control of even the site and are locked out of the system. The data has been corrupted but they do have a back up and are scrambling to get this situation resolved."

So if the above is to be believed, Mr. Medina — who managed Registerfly's servers and information systems — may have locked down certain key Registerfly servers leaving the remaining management unable to access their own systems. As a result, hundreds of thousands of customers could also have been left high and dry.

There is even a tell all video.

One frustrated Registerfly customer even went so far as to produce a special video describing his trials and tribulations at Registerfly. The video is well done and certainly gets his point across. To see that video please click here.

ICANN will resolve this situation.

ICANN has been working hard trying to resolve this knotty situation. On February 21st they gave Registerfly 15 working days to resolve their problems but things seem to have only gotten worse. So there is more than a good possibility that Registerfly will be de-credited. De-creditation would be the final nail in Registerfly’s coffin. To see the Notice of Breach ICANN sent to Registerfly please click here.

In the event Registerfly loses its accreditation, ICANN will work to migrate those customers — who have remained with Registerfly through this disaster — to other registrars.

Im currently in the middle of a law suit with them.

They wont give me my money back and im sueing them for loss of earnings.

Take a look at my tickets screenshot below.

Customer support is NON EXISTANT. Id recommend to WHMCS to remove the Registerfly Domain names module immediately.

You probably shouldn't be discussing a lawsuit in public; ask your solicitor.

Also, would you please reduce the above image to a more reasonable size so it's not pushing out the forum display? No need for a huge image to show the info from the middle you'd wanted.

It's a shame because of all the domain registrars I've worked with/looked at, RegisterFly had the BEST AND EASIEST TO USE API SYSTEM! :)

Matt

They may have had the best and easiest to use API system matt but i cant see where that is true.

When i setup my details in the backend of whmcs it gave me several call / return errors from registerly.

One particulary saying "The domain you are registering cannot be completed due to another registration of the same name".

Error 504 i think.

Also i did try to register 1 specific domain last week and i had to go to stargate to get it registered.

Overall i really do think you should remove it from the system.

They dont deserve the priviledge to be called partners on their website.

We are late getting this news, and we're jumping ship right now, but I really do think it would be in the best interests of anyone who is using a RegisterFly via WHMCS to be notified of the current situation with RegisterFly.

Court decision allows imminent termination of RegisterFly

ICANN granted the right to act on transfers as soon as possible; plan in action

Under a preliminary injunction issued on Thursday 26 April 2007, ICANN now has the right to terminate RegisterFly’s accreditation as soon as possible. RegisterFly failed to meet the conditions of a temporary restraining order (TRO) which the Court issued on 16 April.

Full Story at ICANN Blog

This FAQs for RegisterFly customers also from ICANN, is very useful.

IMHO not notifying known RegisterFly/WHMCS users, even if it is merely to discontinue the gateway, would I think be unconscionable.

We were about to use Registerfly for our Domain Registrations until we come across the scandals and ICANN response.

We agree that WHMCS and resellers of WHMCS should have to inform their clients about the issues with Registerfly. Also to remove the API from WHMCS to prevent any unknowing users of WHMCS/their clients falling victim to Registerfly as a result of simply using a client area.

  • WHMCS CEO

The issues the RegisterFly company has is something to be dealt with between them and their customers. It is not something we as a company will be getting involved in. The module will be removed when the next update occurs but we will certainly not be advising clients not to use them. People can choose to use whatever registrar they want. Currently all billing systems that had them integrated still do and as far as I'm aware, people are still using them.
