How to stop the client from changing

If you do think you've got the right idea between registrant and registrar then you could modify the template file to prevent domain contact details being updated.

I also highly recommend against this, and hope you've got it set out in your terms and conditions so your customers are fully aware of the complications it involves.

There's some good advice in this thread and I do think you should take some of it into consideration, but beyond that I think this 'discussion' should come to an end.

If anyone cares to read here

http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120329

you can see what happens when hosts decide to play games with domainnames...

1 the domain name in question is and was always owned by debscrafts however the host changed the user details to put the domainname in their name and are now holding her site and domainname hostage.

Im pretty sure this is going to get someone in hot water.

but lets take this one step further.

Owned by Zen Ventures LTD

so your telling us that in your opinion this domain name should appear as OWNED by you.

and that only the technical and admin information belongs to Zen Ventures?

what do you plan on doing when a client tries to go somewhere else.

are you then going to release the domainname to them to allow transfer?

we have dealt with this in the past and have a customer thats dealing with it now and is actually having to totally rebrand their store because their host is holding their domain name ( which they have owned for over 7 years ) hostage......

rather than yelling and screaming at these folks stop and ask yourself, can I really be the only enlightened one or do these folks have a point.

Mr Yam A Harr1,

Here's an interesting quote that I wonder if you have considered, or informed your happy customers about.

In the eyes of the domain Registry to which all the Registrars interact, and the Registry's oversight body (like ICANN), whoever is listed in the domain whois record as the domain Registrant is the legal owner of the domain name.

....

If it lands in a dispute proceeding it will be an open and shut case: they own the name.

Would you care to comment on that?

I don't understand the purpose of this conversation. The Registrar is the company that provides the domain while the Registrant is the person/company that owns it. For my domain, (as indicated on a WHOIS) the company where I bought it is the Registrar while my information is listed as the Registrant. I don't understand why you would want to change that. If my Registrar put their name for the Registrant, I would get my domain somewhere else.
