ChrisGooding
Hi guys, Just a quick one. We have a client who signed up for a 12 month contract with us, and is now wanting to leave early, and has refused to pay what is owed. They have given loads of excuses to try and buy time so they can move their stuff (including domains) away from us. We have now obviously shut their servers off, but they are still trying to buy time with crappy excuses while they transfer there domains away from us. We are thinking of witholding the auth codes until we reach a resolution on the payment side of things.... What's your opinions on doing this?
openmind
It's my understanding that you can refuse to release a domain if there is money owing on the actual domain registration, not hosting, itself. You can always mark the domain as pending or even cancelled to stop it being moved.

BionicInternet
Your simply not allowed to do this - as annoying as it is. I believe it is against ICCAN Rules as the domain is legally theres.
ChrisGooding
Cheers Bion..... Knew there would be something. Now to look for loopholse, such as the old... we wont stop transfer but we charge an administration fee of (isert owed balance), lol. Hopefully it will exist
openmind
Yes but if you have renewed the domain on their behalf but they have not paid you for it it would be very easy to argue that the domain is not theirs as it has not been paid for... Of course if you have paid for a renewal without receiving funds from the client then that would be fairly foolish but I digress
ChrisGooding
Nah, they did pay for the domain, and a vps but then a few months after signed up to 2 12 month contracts for dedis.... And are now refusing to pay for the dedis Customers... who'd have em ey?
openmind
Then the domain is irrelevant in this case as money is not owed on the domain. If they are refusing to pay for the dedis then you can only try and claim the money through the legal system as long as your contract holds up. This is why we bill dedis thirty days in advance and don't set them up until they have been paid in full...
Matt Wade
Let them transfer the domains away. You have no right to stop them. If you stop them you are setting yourself up for possible legal trouble and bad publicity.
ChrisGooding
Thanks for the comments guys. As said, it was a thought we had, and have never suggested it to the client in any way. Just trying to get opinions on what options are available to us.
Lawrence
Have you threatened to send their account to a collections agency? Collections affect their credit and all, ya know
easyhosting
If you are in the UK Chris. PM me and I will tell you how to take this client to the cleaners. I had a similar thing with a client who eventually I ended up issing a warrant against them, a 10GBP owed become a £150 warrant and they paid up
