netearth
Well it is going through : http://www.icann.org/en/announcements/announcement-12nov08-en.htm A snippet : >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The termination of ICANN-accredited registrar EstDomains is to go ahead, effective 24 November 2008. On 28 October 2008, ICANN sent a notice of termination to EstDomains, Inc. (EstDomains) based on an Estonian Court record reflecting the conviction of EstDomains' then president, Vladimir Tsastsin, of credit card fraud, money laundering and document forgery. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Lawrence
I wasn't aware that the ICANN termination was ever in danger of not occurring. It's about time ICANN does something good, as they have gotten (in my opinion) way too complacent and corrupt in their practices.
othellotech
I wasn't aware that the ICANN termination was ever in danger of not occurring. there was some to-ing and fro-ing regarding the directorship, but ... NE1 - are you bidding to take on the 300k domains ?
Drac0
I wasn't aware that the ICANN termination was ever in danger of not occurring. It's about time ICANN does something good, as they have gotten (in my opinion) way too complacent and corrupt in their practices. Judging by the posts, the possibility that it may not happen was because before their president, Vladimir Tsastsin went to court, he resigned as president and someone else took his place. So technically, when the court found him guilty he wasn't the president of the company. Looks like they did the right thing though and went ahead with the termination.
netearth
there was some to-ing and fro-ing regarding the directorship, but ...NE1 - are you bidding to take on the 300k domains ? Hi OT, Nope, although we are having quite a few signups in the last couple of weeks >500 and a fair number of transfer ins from ESTdomain'ers so to speak. The reason we didnt express an interest in ESTdomains is because of the poss future issues, resellers are certainly unhappy and their customer base isnt much happier either I would suspect. Just imagine, taking on 281,000 domains on the 24th, by the 26th my support chaps would be trying to lynch me. Remember our primary punters are you guys, resellers, not end users. I just hope for the sake of the current resellers that ESTdomains do not do a RegFly and continue taking money with no registrations working, nor able to request refund. bdnero
Remember our primary punters are you guys, resellers, not end users. Chris Then you may be bid to take their Resellers only. I just hope for the sake of the current resellers that ESTdomains do not do a RegFly and continue taking money with no registrations working, nor able to request refund. Chris Why this?
netearth
Then you may be bid to take their Resellers only. It is not as easy as that, if it comes down to domains, ICANN only care about the domains, not who they are managed by so to speak. So for instance, the registrants would be aok, the information sent to IronMountain is basically a copy of the WHOIS (with proper registrant details, not private details), which as you may have noticed doesnt include reseller, just the end user info. Therefore ICANN would if ESTdomains didnt opt to give their entire domain count to a new registrar, look at the interest they have received from other registrars and then select one. Why this? Well when RegFly went pop, I wasnt able to register domains, nor request a refund... They still have $$$'s of mine, I was not able to get a refund and not able to reg/renew a domain.
bdnero
I am actually worry about downtime. Is there any downtime may happen? Does Reseller and their customer will face any problem for this transfer process?
netearth
I am actually worry about downtime. Is there any downtime may happen? Does Reseller and their customer will face any problem for this transfer process? Hi BDnero, Well, it all depends who takes them over, so DirectI does, then it would be a 5 mins change I would have thought and away you go, but what if it is a registrar that doesn't easily support Resellers. I wouldnt worry about it until it happens, ie around the 24th. However if you have their DNS services, I would assume this will all continue to work, with a little luck whoever then takes over the domains will strike a deal with ESTdomains and continue to sell domains to EST allowing them to continue service etc. It could be a real easy time, then again, it could be a real nightmare You wont know until it happens, but in the interests of your clients and your clients domains look now just in case.
handsonwebhosting
Nice to see that the process is going forward. I know they had put a delay on it, but now that they've set a date it looks like things will move forward. My concern (simliar to NE1) is that when they do stop the registration process with this company is the company going to be still in operation and support their CURRENT users and just not allowed to register new ones, or are they just going to close the doors and screw the users. Hopefully there's a clause where they are forced to operate for "X" weeks/months until a suitable buyer is found to take over the domains. Fingers crossed for those that are with them! Adding 300k domains to a support crew overnight would be a little more challenging than "growing pains" and I wouldn't wish that on anyone! It'll end up being someone like GoDaddy or TuCows or NetSol that will likely end up with the domains.
netearth
All depends how co-operative estdomains will be!. We have put in place a refugee plan to assist in migration, but we shall see which way they jump.
