ihostgreen
Hi, We are soon to be offering dedicated servers and wanted to get an idea of what software / website services people are using to monitor their servers? Also how have you integrated with WHMCS if you have Thanks
handsonwebhosting
Ah - my favorite subject We've used everything from NOCManager to NOCWizard, to Ubersmith (which had billing included), custom programs, online services etc etc. With more than 300 servers, going through a service is impossible as it just costs too much. So we use a combination of in house and OpenSource programs: Zabbix is great if you have a limited number of servers (and you have a powerful server). Naggios is another. Groundwork uses Naggios, but makes the setup so much easier. Currently we're working on another inhouse version which not only pulls load and usage etc, but also versions of software that we monitor etc. There are no plans to make that version public at this time (as it's just not pretty), but who knows, maybe as winter aproaches and our programmers have less and less to do, they'll devote more time to the server monitoring program.
penguin
I'll recommend Nagios as well - very customisable and reliable
danield
I just googled Nagios and it looks interesting. Can someone give me some basic info like what it does and how to install it? Thanks!
penguin
It basically allows you to configure multiple hosts to monitor and multiple services on each host, eg HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc. You can configure how alerts are handles and to whom they are sent, even depending on the time of the day. Installation is as per the instructions they provide on their site, which there's not much point in copying onto here.

WisTex
IPCheck Server Monitor works nicely for me. I also use some gadgets in Windows Vista Sidebar that ping my servers periodically. isAlive and Server Ping. These, of course, are not as comprehensive as something like IPCheck Server Monitor or any of the other ones mentioned here, but it makes it easy to monitor right from my desktop.

danield
Thanks for the help penguin? This is what I want, something that can monitor 3-4 servers that can monitor httpd, sql etc either for online or windows app. Thanks!
azrahn
Hi, Please have a look at ZenOss. It has every thing the others have and more. And best of all it is for free! Ronald.
handsonwebhosting
ZenOss is another great solution. I had looked at the comercial version of this a while ago too - just the ability to track inventory and what changes have been made on what server etc is a great help.

WisTex
IPCheck Server Monitor has been discontinued and replaced with PRTG Network Monitoring Thanks for the update. My old version of IPCheck has been pumping away for years and never needed to use anything else. Maybe I'll check out the new version.
davet
For a simple desktop version that you can run on Windows XP checkout http://www.tembria.com It runs as a local web server so you could make it accessible from the internet if you wanted to. Easy to setup and simple to configure. Much easier to setup and config than nagios in my opinion.
handsonwebhosting
Another great monitoring system (and configuration tracking system) is http://www.OpenNMS.com. I've been looking at this more and more in the past few weeks. Similar to Zenoss and Zabbix but just a little easier. Also supports monitoring from multiple locations and servers but still uses the same database to insert all the info.
wsa
I use my own monitor script that i did and soon to be integrating with whmcs

For $600 I sure would hope it's easier to setup and config than a free software package like Nagios.
Roger
Holy Cow! I setup openNMS on my internal network just to test. Very easy to setup and configure. Also added my external boxes to it and it didn't miss a beat. I was impressed that it found and acknowledged that I had Exchange server running internally. Now to just find the time to study/understand what it's actually saying... lol...
handsonwebhosting
hehe.. Congrats on that Roger. I guess you already had CentOS 5 running on your box I was working on a CentOS 4.7 trying to configure for the longest time with lots of failures, but once I swapped to a CentOS 5, it was magic. I do find the docs a little lacking in places - there's a few things i WANT to do, but can't figure out how - and finding help is pretty hard. But - it's a very friendly program on the server (very little CPU overhead). I've got it set up on 20 boxes so far, and it's pulling stats without any issues. I need to figure out ways to edit the SNMP calls and put in some stuff to pull version information from the server (specific program versions like cPanel, CSF, OpenSSH etc etc).. I've yet to figure out a way of importing that kind of information. If you have any ideas, drop me an email and maybe we can colaborate a little on the system. I like it - much easier than the others I tried.
Roger
hehe where has this thing been hiding...! If I can get it to actually monitor my Exchange Server I'll be in IT heaven.... lol I installed it first on a CentOS 5.2 laptop to test without too much problem. I have a 5.2 test box at home and the install on it has not gone so smooth. Ironically I had Zenoss on the 5.2 box at home and it was just frustrating. Would love to collaborate but don't know how much help I would be.
