How much should a domain cost?

Hi upon reviewing the prices of the TLD that I offer I came to realize that I only get a $0.60 USD profit for each .com renewal and registration. I would like to increase at least to $40 USD to have a healthy profit, but I am worried that this price would be too high in comparison to other competitors. I would like to have an estimate of the proper price for the following TLD's: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .tax

For common TLDs, I'd keep pricing close enough to the market, with enough margin to cover payment fees, support time, renewals and admin work. If you want higher pricing, make it a managed domain service, not just "domain registration".

$40 for a .com renewal might be difficult to compete with, especially if most customers are comparing prices across different registrars. I’d suggest checking your costs and competitor pricing first, then setting a reasonable margin that still keeps the prices attractive. You could also consider different pricing for registration and renewal.

There are only a small number of registrars that have .com domains under $10 for new registrations, but they all increase to more then $10 for renewals. Your pricing makes no sense for profit unless your cost is well below that. Is it?

We sell them to our customers for $10.00 We buy them from our register for $7

But then again Bear we are only a Web Design Software company we do not sell them as a public service only to Design clients for company startups

A $0.60 margin per domain is thin once you factor in payment processing fees and support time, so it really only works if domains are a gateway to higher-margin services like hosting. Most hosts keep common TLDs priced close to the market and make their real profit on hosting plans and add-ons. One thing to watch for is cheap first-year promos from registrars — the renewal price is what your customers will judge you on. Bundling the domain free with an annual hosting plan is another common way to stay competitive without losing money on the domain itself.

Honestly, with wholesale .com sitting around $10 these days, most small hosts land between $12 and $15 at retail. I'd rather keep renewals flat than run a cheap first year that jumps later, since that's the bit customers actually complain about.

Maybe if someone bought the domain and made it into a discount domain seller, that would be true. Currently nothing there.
