Paypal transition question

Recommended Posts

So my understanding, from the release notes - the transition is a mass cancellation of old subscriptions and forcing users to login and update their payment method?

It's not very clear at all - but if this is correct I forsee some angry users

Hi @teklan,

Only Client Accounts with a Pay Method in place for the PayPal Payments gateway will have old Subscriptions cancelled the next time a PayPal transaction is made in their account. So it doesnt happen for all clients at once and there will be no interruption in payments and no action required by clients or admins.

I've written a KB article with further information: https://help.whmcs.com/m/v811/l/1881652-paypal-subscription-cancellation-emails

Update: Matt has just published a blog post which provides a detailed explanation of the migration: https://blog.whmcs.com/133755/paypal-payments-auto-migration-qa

Fair play John, Cheers for the kb to clarify.  I'll be hanging on to see if others have a bad time but that's a totally acceptable migration and what we'd started doing manually ourselves so if it functions as intended - It will save us time! I will rescind my eye roll when I originally read it!

I also have a concern on this new Paypal Payment gateway on 8.11.0 . So any paypal module (deprecated) will be transitioned to this new module ? I am currently using the old Paypal module.

Like all WHMCS payment modules, there has been some kind of error, however despite this we decided to give this new PayPal module a try.

  • It's totally unclear to the end user if their account is linked under Payment Methods. This is going to cause support tickets when a customer wants to remove their payment information.
  • You cannot see in the admin panel if a client has PayPal added as a payment method (This is comical). You MUST go into the transaction itself making it impossible to get an idea at a glance what account the client used.
  • It's not saved nor seamless. The client still needs to re-auth with PayPal if they purchase an upgrade or another product.
  • It's unclear if it's an actual subscription.
  • This is the best one. You can't even add PayPal as a payment method to an existing account.

Honestly what are you guys thinking!

Hi @mikeos

Thanks for your feedback.

1 & 2. I'm surprised to hear that you've struggled to see if a client has linked their PayPal account, as it is listed in the Payment Methods page in the client area and same in the admin area:

client_area.pngadmin_area.png

3. Once linked, the client will just select the linked account from the list, and click Checkout - no re-authorisation is required:

4.  It is not a Subscription as you can make charges against the linked PayPal account on demand. Clients will see it in their PayPal account on the "Automatic Payments" page.

5. The linking process does require a transaction to be made, so you can't link your PayPal account like entering a credit card.

1, 2 and 3 all don't exist for us. (Australian PayPal Account)

4. if above actually worked, wouldn't be an issue.

5. This raised questions with customers. They don't want to wait around for invoices to come in and then pay. They want to set up PayPal and then forget, so their bills get paid. You shouldnt get support tickets over something as simple as adding payment methods.
