Client Accidentally Cancelled Subscription

In the new version 3.5.1, how do I re-create a subscription?

 

I have removed the old subscription number (cancelled) and it is set to monthly in the products screen, but when the customer clicks the PayPal button, it just goes to pay the invoice, and will not setup a subscription???

 

(I have forced subscriptions ticked in the payment gateway settings)

I believe it will only start a subscription if the payment is made on or before the due date. If made after, it will just be a one time payment and it will need to be paid the following month before the due date runs out.
