Sub-domain set up

Pedal Hard

Question

I want to sell a SaaS service and automate sign ups.

The new user will enter the information needed for a card purchase but must also specify a sub-domain on a pre-determind domain for the service.

So if the SaaS service domain is:  supersaas.com and the purchaser is from Acme Inc., their instance of the SaaS service could be accessed via https://acme.supersaas.com.

  • Can WHMCS manage this using standard functionality?
  • If not, is there a mature plugin that can?
  • If not, would it be possible to build a plugin to work with the standard product?

I understand that we still need a backend system to actually provision the SaaS service on the sub-domain.

Bonus points: if any of the above can notify the purchaser if the preferred sub-domain is taken.

Does this check for sub-domains already used and prevent attempts to re-use them?

it should do - and you can edit the list of banned subdomain prefixes that you don't want users to try to use.

This setting is used to prevent orders being placed using any of the subdomains listed within the field for products with the free subdomain option enabled. Add new subdomains to block in a comma separated list.

For example the default values will block users from placing orders using a subdomain such as ftp.yourdomain.com.

it's worth noting by default that users can choose whatever subdomain value they want - other than those that already exist and from the above banned list... so Acme Inc could buy roadrunner.supersaas.com if they wanted to.
