New Name Server Tracker Module: Free on GitHub

Recommended Posts

Hey WHMCS'ers,

We just submit this to the marketplace yesterday, probably won't be live there until Tue. It's to help you keep track of the name servers currently in use and it's completely free, though we ask that you don't request features unless you're willing to work on them yourself and submit a pull request, as I only have the time to repair bugs, not add new things (which is why it's free and open source).

You'll find it here: https://github.com/websavers/WHMCS-Name-Server-Tracker

I don't have any screenshots because they could only list *our* name servers which aren't exactly a secret to customers, but still...

The module grabs all name servers assigned to Servers added to WHMCS, as well as configured in Client "Server/VPS" products and lists them roughly in order. It also allows you to manually add custom entries to the list for servers which will not be added to either the official servers list in WHMCS or a client's account (like internal system servers). More details in the repository README.

We built this to ensure we didn't have to use a spreadsheet somewhere else to keep track of name servers and with the idea that someone may wish to enhance it in the future to add automatic name server registration via an existing registrar module in WHMCS, which would be pretty handy. It could also be enhanced by having a verification system in place that looks up both the A record and whois info on the name server to confirm both are in place and show a warning if not. I look forward to seeing if anyone wishes to add such functionality.

Enjoy!

Does it means it will show result of all customer's doman with their current nameserver they are using?

Hey there,

No, this does no lookups. It's purely a list of your servers (found under Setup > Products > Servers in WHMCS) and their name servers as entered, plus a list of any VPS or Dedicated server in your system, with its name server fields filled out. In the config for the module, if you provide a particular domain that you use for name servers, it will *only* show those that use that domain. If you don't do this, then you'll get a full list of name servers from all VPS and dedicated products in WHMCS.

It seems you won't see this module in the marketplace because they require screenshots and more elaborate descriptions. Since this is such a simple module (overall) and because it displays sensitive data (our entire list of name servers), we would need to A) write a ton of marketing spin to make it sound fancy (not our thing: we like to tell it as it is), and B) take screenshots and blur the whole thing out, which is kind of useless anyway.

It's also not worth our while to populate our test install of WHMCS with servers and dummy name servers purely for this purpose, when it's a free module. (If anyone from WHMCS sees this, you may wish to relax your requirements for free, or at least open source modules). But you can all enjoy it via GitHub!
