Roger
Hey guys, can't seem to find a solution to this annoyance. Setting up an EMail only package/account that doesn't still allow ftp. I've set up a package in WHM that is EMail only assigned it the xmail theme and generated an email only feature set for it. Nothing that is NOT email related is activated in the feature set and 0 ftp accounts are set for the package (amongst other things). I've used an .htaccess redirect from the main site->main site/webmail which works just fine. WHMCS sets up the account just fine. The problem is the main account user can still ftp to the site. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to stop their ftp access. I prefer NOT to edit the ftp conf file on the server if I don't have to. Seems like this type of config should be possible via WHM. But I can't find it... Thanks guys, look forward to your responses. -Roger
bear
By default Cpanel includes a default mail and FTP account with each new setup using the Cpanel password. Setting FTP accounts to 0 only disallows additional accounts, not the default one. I don't know of a way to disable that without editing it for all new accounts, not just mail only.

I suspected that was the case but was really hoping there was something else. I should be able to edit the virtual FTP sites with proFTP and remove the domain in question which would leave other domains as is. Can you think of any reason that would not work?
Roger
FYI looking at the cPanel forums. Looks like disabling the main account ftp via WHM is not possible. Best one can do is remove the ftp manager etc from the feature set. If the user is familiar with cpanel at all they'll know they can ftp with the main account credentials. Thanks for the info Bear... -Roger

othellotech
The problem is the main account user can still ftp to the site. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to stop their ftp access. I prefer NOT to edit the ftp conf file on the server if I don't have to. Thats a "feature" of most control panels - Cpanel, Ensim etc will always allow FTP by the unix user aka the account owner. We decided to use it as an "upsell opportunity" and simply go through the /home on the mail-only server, and anyone using significant space (for backups or uploading pages etc) gets a phone call to discuss their need to upgrade to full hosting ...
Roger
Rob, that's probably the best way to deal with it. Making lemonade with a lemon so to speak. Evidently when cPanel upgrades/updates are performed I've been told the files I would be tempted to edit to stop the ftp access would be regenerated. SO what I've done is chown their public_html folder to root. They can still connect but can't do anything. I do like your idea better though. I suppose you manually monitor? -Roger
