[Important] ICANN's New Transfer Policy

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder on December 1st ICANN's New Transfer Policy kicks in. If you haven't yet read Matt's blog ICANN's New Transfer Policy: What you need to know head over and take a look now.

In short this means that when updating a domain's contact details, it needs to be approved by the registrant. Different registrars are implementing it in different ways:

ResellerClub & LogicBoxes are making backwards incompatible API changes which will prevent updating domain contact details. An updated module for v6.0, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3 is available for download from this blog post if you have not yet installed this and you are using ResellerClub.

eNom & OpenSRS: These registrars are handling the changes from there side and there should be no impact to you. Please refer to their respective sites for more information on how they are handling these changes.

Resello: Resello sent an email to their users advising how they are handling this change, below is an extract of the relevant information:

The approval process contains a branded email with a link to the mydomainprovider.com approval page, hosted by our registrar. Once the old and new registrants have confirmed the change, the initiated operation will be executed. To limit the number of times we need to email your customers, we combine the approval email with the Form of Authorization email (if feasible). The approval email contains the details of the old and new registrant, your brand information and a space for your own text. You can setup your brand information in your Reseller Area, at the Support panel.

If you have any questions on this or any issues please feel free to ask below and our team will get back to you as soon as possible. We will update this post with more information and FAQ's as it becomes available.

Chris,

Isn't it really true that Enom / OpenSRS handle this only if you [the reseller] specifically designate them as DA (which requires you, the reseller, to confirm with them that you will be able to prove (with timestamps / IP) that any/every customer of yours with a domain has authorized Enom / OpenSRS to be the DA?

Or when you say that Enom / OpenSRS are handling that behind the scenes and it requires no changes in WHMCS or action upon our [the reseller's] part, are you saying that Enom / OpenSRS are handling the back/forth email verifications and all of that through their messaging system.

If the latter, I agree. If the former, then people need to understand that the registrar is not going to become the blanket DA for all of your domains registered through them unless (a) you, the reseller, have specifically authorized / OK'd / agreed to that and (b) you, the reseller, are able to provide proof (if ICANN requests it from Enom / OpenSRS) that any/all of your clients have opted in to making Enom or OpenSRS the DA.

Mike
