Posted December 3, 2013 Share Posted December 3, 2013 Hi Anders, wow my question must have been stupid or difficult. well it wasn't a stupid question, but it's a feature that's been requested for years on the forums (long before I arrived!) and there are currently no signs that WHMCS are going to add the option to a future release. however, I was asked some weeks ago whether it was possible to translate product descriptions - after playing with a few ideas, I can confirm that it can definitely be done! so, then I thought - well if I can translate descriptions, what else can I translate? could I make WHMCS truly multilingual and make the solution flexible for others to use? the answer is that I can - I now believe every aspect of the client side can be thoroughly translated - certainly everything that i've tried so far has worked: product descriptions, product features, product groups, knowledgebase, support tickets, downloads, categories etc. the translation feature that i'm currently most proud of coding is the option to change how dates are displayed throughout the site - firstly, I found two completely different methods for translating month and/or day names into the appropriate foreign equivalent; secondly, I added an option to the customer's profile that allows them to choose how their dates are displayed - so American's might want to see them as MM/DD/YYYY, Europeans might prefer DD/MM/YYYY, others might want to see month names (translated into their own language and/or abbreviated) - if no choice is made or default is chosen, the dates will be displayed using admin settings, otherwise the dates are shown as the customer wants to see them. I think I spent a week writing a detailed user contribution about that - it's about 6,000 words with 25+ images! but by far the most difficult part of the multilingual project is product names - yes it can be done (I think!), but product names are used so extensively throughout WHMCS, to ensure that the translations are always used correctly, and at all stages, is technically challenging! I think I know what the solution is for product names, i'm just trying to work out the coding that achieves it! this is a complex project - just when you think you have a solution to an issue, you find an example of where it doesn't work... so when I get the time, i'm still ironing out some issues, testing my coding... and making extensive notes. when the multilingual project is completed (or everything apart from product names!), i'll either release it as a series of user contributions, make it into an addon module to sell, create customised templates - or perhaps customise existing sites for users.... currently, i'm still writing them as user contributions - but having spent so much time working on this, it would be ideal to make some income from my knowledge of the topic! 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
