Need a starting point

Hi

I'm extremely new to setting up reselling and so far I've got Wordpress on my hosting, a host reseller package and I think I'm going to use reseller.biz to resell domain names. I've started using WHMCS but it's a monster.

I've started reading through the documentation but struggle a bit.

My host has given me WHM to create packages and by the looks of it create custom cpanels. I've created the package I want to sell in there.

All I need to do is connect WHMCS into my current set up.

I'm away to try and figure out what's next but if you could help I would really appreciate it

Colin

1 add the server.

2 add your packages to your server in whm.

3 add your Products/Services in whmcs.

4 setup support and cron jobs.

5 setup mailing and your General Settings and Automation Settings.

6 setup your Domains/TLDS and prices.

Colin,

I think wrighty is pretty much right in his list - personally I might swap 4 & 6 around, but it wouldn't matter in your case... I get the impression you don't have existing clients to import, so that's one less hassle to deal with!

I too was daunted when I first installed it a few months ago - especially after reading the documentation and finding some of it confusing, other bits wrong and some of the procedures a little bizarre... I think it took about three installations before I got it correct!

anyway, stick with it - it gets easier with time!

I think I might be asking the wrong question. From the details you've given am I right in saying that it's for setting up new clients of mine?

I suppose what I'm looking for is to set up my packages on my web site and automate the whole process right through so I don't have to do anything. A bit like what it was like when I bought my reseller package from my supplier.

What's the most efficient way to do that? My site sits on wordpress. Should I look for an ecommerce plugin or would I be better just to create custom pages? I installed WHMCS bridge and it's automatically created a page but I don't think it's what I need.

I'm not confused! I'm demented I think

welcome to installing WHMCS!

what I would suggest that you do is focus on wrighty's six steps first... you're trying to jump straight to step 10, which is configuring how it looks and how it works in practice... that really can wait until you have the fundamentals in place.

  1. add the server - http://docs.whmcs.com/CPanel/WHM
  2. add your packages to your server in whm - http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/WHMDocs/AddPackages
  3. add your Products/Services in whmcs - http://docs.whmcs.com/Products_and_Services
  4. setup support - http://docs.whmcs.com/Support_Center
  5. setup crons and automation - http://docs.whmcs.com/Crons
  6. setup mailing and your General Settings.
  7. setup your Domains/TLDS and prices - http://docs.whmcs.com/Domain_Pricing

this is not about setting up new clients, you need to build the store first - "build it and they shall come" is the hope.

there are no quick fix solutions or shortcuts here - the list above is not even complete and at best it will likely take you days to setup - maybe weeks or months if you want to thoroughly test everything.

ironically, the fact that you want to automate it completely, will require a lot more testing - e.g., for practical reasons, such as for possible fraud orders, you may not want to automate domain registrations for new customers... so that at least would require some manual intervention on your part.

you would need to consider who would be your choice of registrar to obtain your domains - you mentioned reseller.biz, but i'm not sure if there is a whmcs registrar module for them... if you meant resell.biz, then I think there would be a module.

also, think about collecting payments - whether that be via bank transfers, paypal, 2checkout or any other method... you'd have to calculate their charges and consider them when deciding on your own prices.

anyway, try not to think about the bigger picture, just take it a step at a time and it should all start to slowly come together.

thanks again, you guys have been most helpful.

couple more things while I work througb the steps above.

1) have you got a recomended domain name reseller company that I can use?

2) I have a couple of clients I need to start billing. Can they be added directly to whmcs? in saying that J dont really have a payment system now that I think about it. What should I do for that?

1) have you got a recommended domain name reseller company that I can use?

for many years we've used only OpenSRS for gtld domains (.com etc) - but I think you have to pay to join them now... the full list of domain registrars with built-in whmcs modules are listed at the page below:-

http://docs.whmcs.com/Domain_Registrars

Enom might be an option for you - never used them, but I think it's well integrated with whmcs and you can get a free account with them by following the link on the Enom page - http://docs.whmcs.com/Enom

btw - you can use different registrars for different tld's, but for now you might be better off using just one.

adding clients is quite straightforward - and if it's only a few, then you might as well do it manually.

http://docs.whmcs.com/Client_Management

how do the clients pay you now - check/cheque, bank transfer, cash ? if it's any of them, there will be a payment gateway available - http://docs.whmcs.com/Payment_Gateways

for checks/cheques, you can use the mail in payment gateway - http://docs.whmcs.com/Mail_In_Payment
