Changing server

paulr

Question

I'm about to set up a new hosting resellier account with a new provider. I want to add WHMCS myself (they don't have it as a freebie and I'm happy to have the independance of owning tthe license myself depending on the answer s to the questions below).

I haven't used this provider before and though the reveiws are good there's always a possibility that there's a problem and I decide to move to a different reseller some time in the future.

1. If I buy a WHMCS license now and install it on the new reseller account, will I be able to move it to a new server/reseller if the need arises?

2. If so, how would I transfer the WHNCS system and retain all the settings, packages, domains etc? Is it as simple as copying across the files, and the db (export/import)?

3. Assuming the answer to 1 is yes, would it have to be on the same domain? Or can it be switched? (I'd expect to be using the same domain, I'm just trying to cover as many options as possible with one post).

All sounds a bit doom and gloom, but I'm hoping I never need the answers!

Perfect. Thank you. :-)

I'm also assuming that if I get a monthly license initially to see how I get on with setup and functionality, that I can upgrade to a one-time version at any stage by just buying that and updating the config with the new license?

You can convert at any time. I don't believe that needs to be changed on the config, it's all at the WHMCS licensing server end and automatic. If you buy and find it still sees the old one, usually a license reissue is all it takes, done from the client area at WHMCS. Quick and easy.

Now I have my WHMCS I have a follow up question (probably better suited to the 'Tips, tricks & How-to' section but my permissions aren't allowing me to post there for some reason) ...

I know I need a SSL installed on the domain I want to run WHMCS on, but does the SSL need to be installed BEFORE I install WHMCS, or AFTER. Or does it not matter (in which case I assume if I install WHMCS first I'll need to make some changes retrospectively in the setup or config to use the https URL?).

Your cert is tied to the domain / subdomain, not WHMCS itself. You can have WHMCS running in non-SSL mode and then convert it once you install the cert.
