Yeah. I was really very interested in using Google Apps, but was a little peeved when I realised that It wouldn't work! :P

Nothing stops you from finding another dedicated MAIL host though.

Oh me too :(

I just love gmail! I have a dedicated server only for my site and whmcs, I could totally use it, but still keep loving gmail hosted.. lol

I just read that they do make backups from IMAP servers.. maybe IMAP fully support is coming! Maybeeee :)

Eureka! GMail has gained IMAP support, one of the most requested features for Google's web-based e-mail service. More than storage space or other features, free web-based IMAP access pushes GMail over the top when compared to offerings from Yahoo, Microsoft and most other web-based e-mail services.

I agree with both MACsacr and Uberhost (wow my head is spinning saying that) I use google apps for the calendar, googletalk and google docs, i thought about using gmail but realised that whmcs would propbably not work for piping and also that i would only be using gmail for the pretty interface. I think its a bad sign for companies using an email service other than what they run themselves as it shows that they dont trust their own servers to handle mail

You mean using the POP3 import method? If yes, then I have 2 questions:

1. Does someone else use this succesfully with Google Apps?

2. Running that cron every 5 min for 3 accounts wouldn't have an impact on server's load?

Yes - Google Apps comes with POP3 and IMAP; shouldn't be an issue.

Running the cron job every 5 or even every 1 min shouldn't have any impact on the server...

I am working on setting this up tonight and have not had the best luck, but will get it eventually I am sure.

I am kind of amazed some of you guys/girls do not recognize the potential of using Google apps.

First of all, the biggest misconception here is your email will not end in emailuser@gmail.com, it will end in the companies domain name you setup.

I have completely moved over all of my clients over the past 2 months and find gmail backend to be the absolute best at mail on the planet right now. the additional applications such as docs and the usefulness of allowing them to collaborate is huge.

Nobody knows, nor cares if the mail is routed through my servers or not. To be blunt, it is better it is not as it takes a huge load off of them, and dumps it onto Google, who has hundreds of thousands of local mirrors and data centers that can handle my clients needs far better then I ever could, even if I owned my own datacenter.

It's really quite brilliant when you sign up and play with it some.

Looks like they pointed you to the upgraded version you have to pay for.

Yes, they did. But I wouldn't mind paying since I agree that Google Apps is awesome.

Can anyone confirm that you can't route the mail directly with the pay version? At least I'd love to hear people that can confirm using the POP3 import cron.

The POP import method won't currently work with Google Mail but I have just implemented some changes which will mean it will be possible to import emails from Gmail in the next update.

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for that. And when can we expect the next update to be released which will be compatible with POP import of Google Apps email.?

Sriram

here is a solution. if you get this as a response on the cron mail:

POP Import LogDate: 21/04/2008 14:40:01Host:

pop.gmail.comEmail:

support@domain.comAn Error Occured: Can't connect to

gmail-pop.l.google.com,995: Connection timed out

then you must open Egress TCP port 995

Common egress (outbound) TCP ports

The FAQ section in the Cpanel website suggests the following ports:

21, 25, 26, 37, 43, 53, 80, 113, 465, 873, 2089, 3306

(873 and 2089 are supposidely used for the cpanel update script)

For a more complete list of ports and services located on them, check your '/etc/services' file.

Example only to show. the should be more ports added here.

# Common egress (outbound) TCP ports

EG_TCP_CPORTS="22,80,443,995"

let me know if this works :)

i can elaborate a bit... first of all you should check if the APF firewall is installed. if it isnt then thats not the problem :S

configure the firewall: pico /etc/apf/conf.apf

Other Details:

Listening TCP ports: 1,21,22,25,53,80,110,111,143,443,465,993,995,2082,2083,2086,2087,2095,2096,3306

Listening UDP ports: 53,55880

Note: These ports are not auto-configured; they are simply presented for information purposes. You must manually configure all port options.

for use on cpanel servers:

Common ingress (inbound) ports

# Common ingress (inbound) TCP ports -3000_3500 = passive port range for Pure FTPD

IG_TCP_CPORTS="21,22,25,53,80,110,143,443,2082,2083, 2086,2087, 2095, 2096,3000_3500"

#

# Common ingress (inbound) UDP ports

IG_UDP_CPORTS="53"

Common egress (outbound) ports

# Egress filtering [0 = Disabled / 1 = Enabled]

EGF="1"

# Common egress (outbound) TCP ports

EG_TCP_CPORTS="21,25,80,443,43,2089"

#

# Common egress (outbound) UDP ports

EG_UDP_CPORTS="20,21,53"

i just copied from other sites... this one is a good one: http://www.webhostgear.com/61.html
