alexdrans
I'm looking to get started in the web hosting business, and would be looking at WHMCS to manage my payments and other things. Is it ideal to use with a reseller, or would I need to own a server/VPS?

Yes you can use WHMCS if you have a reseller account, master reseller account or alpha account. if you are thinking of starting a web hosting business then in the long run it will be worth investing in at least a VPS rather than having a reseller account from another host, this way you will not be left high and dry if you host vanishes or failed to pay his server fees.

0 easyhosting
Is it really worth it to get a VPS when just starting out? depends on budget and what space etc you want, but with a VPS you have control of the server and not having to rely on other hosts. i started with a reseller account, but had to keep moving as hosts vanished or messed up. it was 4 yrs ago when a host i was with suddenly messed up bug time and i lost 6 clients i took the step to get a VPS and wish id done this years ago. nothing wrong with starting on a reseller account, until you get established Edited February 4, 2011 by easyhosting
0 reddexdesign
I would go for a VPS server or a dedicated personally.
0 easyhosting
if you start with a VPS you have more control from day 1, but as starting go for a managed server and if you look on WHT you will find some that also offer free cpanel.
0 bear
Having the billing application on the same server as hosted clients is inherently less secure (someone's outdated script gets compromised, they attack you from another account) and if the reseller account's server goes down, your clients *and* your support is too. I'd suggest VPS or better.
0 easyhosting
i have a VPS and wish i got one many years ago, as bear says you are more secure having your own VPS as a shared environment can be compromised by someone and it takes the whole server down. Also as extra security I do not host my WHMCS on the same server as my clients
