Elation :) Then back to earth with a bump :( Google Checkout

Hello

OK as of this morning I had a fully functioning WHMCS install, registering domains communicating with WHM I was ecstatic :)

Then I decided to sort out my payment modules, 2 plans I hate Paypal with a passion so they were never going to be on my list so the best 2 other options in the UK Google checkout and of course good old Nochex.

Nochex not a problem easy peesy google checkout grrrrrrrrrrr tlak about back to earth with a bump!!

OK I really need an idiots guide to this, I have an established google checkout account with merchant id etc etc, my problem is the good old SSL, now I register all my domains with namecheap for a while now they have been giving free SSL's with new domains so have a bit of a backlog of free ones to use, they are issued by Comodo and are know as Positive SSL, great I thought till I did a bit of digging it seems Google only accpet certain types of SSL's after looking on their site at the accepted one I cannot located the free ones I have to use, Comodo is listed however? ANyone any ideas?

OK the isiots guide part, so far the WHMCS install has been done on http rather than https how do I do this? I am a fool with such things and never bothered with SSL's for anythign before I have a good idea how to get the certificate and how found some instructions to install it in WHM but what do I then need to do with my WHMCS installation?

As said the more basic the better I am generally not so bad when it come to technicalities but get complete mind block with anything to do with SSL's or DNS 2 subject that to me seem far to overly complicated :(

Any help appreciated was hoping to have all this up and running by the end of the day lol maybe not.......................

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hi John

Thanks for replying :)

So thats it, I was under the impression I had to re-install WHMCS somewhere else on the server as in a https folder or something? As said my mmmmmmm knowledge of these things is well rather limited to say the least :(

Another learning curve to embrace lol :)

Thanks again

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

spent all afternoon trying to sort this out, got an ssl one that google trust pfffffffffff

installed it on my main domain http://www.mydomain.com thinking then that everything behind the domain such as http://www.mydomain.com/client area etc would fall under the ssl nope got it wrong somehwere along the line, my main site pages on http://www.mydomain.com are all ssl protected but anything in a folder http://www.mydomain.co/clientarea etc etc is not and whats more using https:// makes them completely not accessable :(

Dont think I have the energy or patience to go through the whole escapade again really what a crappy crappy crappy thing to have to try and configure! DAM GOOGLE!!!!!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so my next question is........................................

what happens if I dont use GC behind an SSL? I understand it will not communicate with my WHMCS install so no marking of invoices paid etc but will it still take the correct payment? I am not planning on taking the hosting world over so really dont mind manually approving payments in WHMCS when I get an order through.

I am thinking along the right lines? Is the SSL only needed for GC to communicate ack to WHMCS? So if someone places an order and clicks to pay by GC it will forward them to GC with the correct info but GC wont communicate back to let me know they have paid?

If so sod it thats what I am doing for the moment, need to get this site live dont have time to keep faffing with such ridiculous issues, I cant believe GC are almost forcing me to use Paypal not a chance I will go and pay Worldpay before that happens!

One last thought I did notice on the Google site if your software is part of their list of off the shelp e-commerce solution then there is no need for this ridiculous polava, if this is right WHMCS can you not get yourselves on that list??

Just a thought...........................

Right rant over, thanks for any help your time is appreciated

You need to register the ssl certificate to the domain or sub-domain you want secured.

If you register yourdomain.com then https://yourdomain.com and https//yourdomain.com/anyfolder/ will work but https://www.yourdomain.com will not as http://www.yourdomain.com will not as it is classed as a different domain as far as ssl certificates are concerned.

You also need a dedicated IP address for your domain.

While you could decide not to use a ssl certificate, you will loose a number of orders. I for one would never place an order with someone who did not have a ssl certificate.

Hi HostOrca

Thanks for replying, I have now calmed down a little :)

I did get GC working without the ssl and as I though it simply does not communicate back to WHMCS to tell me someone has paid, it is a bit of a faff though and as you said from a trust point of view it is going to be worth my effort now sorting the issue once and for all and using the system properly the way it was intended to be used.

Thanks for your input, if you have any additional light to shed I am all ears :)

Thanks again

Chris

For what its worth, the issue with SSL you're having has to do with your server, not GC. SSL certificates are bound to a specific IP address and less importantly a hostname. https://www.yourdomain.com and https://www.yourdomain.com/clients should both work fine unless you have some misconfiguration somewhere that is redirecting the /clients URI to some other host/IP address, or something is redirecting to a non-SSL URL. WHMCS will do this when accessing some URL's within its system, as it will default to the "SystemURL" rather than the "SystemSSLURL". The workaround is to put your secure address in both settings in the configuration options.

Also, running your billing software without an SSL certificate is not a very good idea, I would advise getting that fixed soon.

Hi Laszlof

Thanks for your reply :)

I am a bit nearer to rectifying this now, only a bit though :(

I have the SSL it has been registered to http://www.mydomain.com I did this thinking that essentially evertyhing then could be http:// or https://.

I have purchased a dedicated Ip address from my server supplier, but heres the problem, my main domain http://www.mydomain.com is registered for nameservers with my registrar, about 3 of my client sites point to these nameservers, so if I change the main site IP address I dont know if I am going to also have to change the nameserver IP address or not, still researching but cant seem to find a simple answer anywhere :(

As soon as I have all that figured out then I can go on to install the SSL and get Google checkout working properly.

There are 2 things I hate more than anything to do with hosting they are DNS and SSL's uhhhhhhhh lucky me :(
