Tree Bones
I plan to resell hosting mostly for customers who will have me build a small site for them. What are the advantages and disadvanteges of the extra $20..00 per year for a dedicated IP? Thanks for any and all input. penguin
Firstly, you should only be using a dedicated IP if you specifically require it. This is an actual requirement of RIPE or whoever is responsible for the issue of the IP address. Generally, the only normal justification for the requirement of a dedicated IP address is if the site will be having an SSL certificate installed on it.
jayshah
The above summarises pretty much everything to do with it. The "advantages" are it looks less like you're on shared hosting, but this is easily undone with a little bit of investigation into your nameservers, reverse DNS, hostnames, etc.

Also now days with IP's you need a vaild reason for getting a dedicated IP for example SSL Certificate. IP addresses are are just not given out by most hosts unless you have a good reason for one.
Sitepearl
Many hosting companies will give you a free dedicated IP with your reseller package.

easyhosting
Many hosting companies will give you a free dedicated IP with your reseller package. Where do you get this from. very few will give a dedicated IP with packages. a dedicated IP is usually an added extra as the host has to pay extra for these and you will only be given a ded IP if you can 100% justify why you require one. An IP cost the host about $1.50 from the ISP. Edited January 6, 2012 by Sitepearl

laszlof
Providers do not have to show 100% usage for dedicated IP allocation. I believe its something more like 75%. And yes, a lot of reseller hosts offer free dedicated IP addresses with their reseller packages. Its assumed that a reseller is probably going to have their own billing platform, which will require SSL, which will require a dedicated IP.

Sliffer21
The datacenter we host in does not keep track. We pay per IP and are free to do whatever with them. We resell most to our customers and they in turn are free to do as they please. Im not sure why they are so lose with them but it works for me.

Sitepearl
I've never been asked for justification - our data center just has us shoot them the MAC address the server we want to setup (or add to), and off we go.
Pipert
Justification for IPv4 these days is becoming the norm. Our providers except for one ask us for valid IP justification when we order more. Bring on IPv6!
easyhosting
i drawback with IPv6 is that these are being used by spammers and sites like Spamcop have not caught up yet and wont recognise IPv6 IPs
