How do affiliates work..

I was just wondering about this scenario...

 

If customer A signs up without the affiliate URL of customer B, but at a later point in time uses customer B's affiliate URL before placing an order, will customer B get rewarded?

 

Or must the affiliate URL be used BEFORE customer A signs up for customer B to receive the reward?

Customer B would receive the commission only for the second order.
