Opening up domain names to .anything. What's your opinion? (especially Aussies)

Intersting that ICANN is planning to open up domain names to ".anything".

This raises a whole heap of questions

 

• How will that affect your business?
  
• How will billing systems like WHMCS cope?
  
• How will small domain name resellers be affected?
  

Also, former Head of ICANN, Paul Twomey, is coming vback to Australia, and his rhetoric is about further opening up the Australaian domain name industry.

 

• Should a non- Australian companies be alllowed to registerl .au domains?
  
• Should a non- Australian companies be alllowed to resell .au domains?
  
• Should au domain rules be releaxed to the point where au domains can be registered by people without a relevant interest?
  

Often these sorts of debates ignore the needs of those on the ground,, and are driven by the needs of large organistions. I thought that this was a relevant topic to ask here, and would like your thoughts.

it's the evolution of the internet. .anything names will however be so expensive to register that they will be limited to major international brands .apple .microsoft .mcdonalds lol!

 

we'll wait and see, I think before they start addressing dwindling domain names they should be pushing more recognised us of IPv6 as the world supply of IPv4 is running out quickly!

Aussie internet was remains back in the early 90's, i would be very surprised to see the incompetent Auda do anything in a real hurry thats for sure!! besides trying to squash me with a bunch of lawyers for dissing them..

no more or less than integrating .me or .cm or .pro or any other (cc)tld's we've done over the past few years

over the next 2 years I forsee a *lot* of consolidation in the domain industry - down to a few large players and everyone else just reselling those few

I partly think its good but also see bad sides to it.

 

Positive: People will be able to customise there website more and it can be more obvious on what the website is about, you also have lots more options for if a domain isn't avalible, you can find a similar TLD (that meaning creating your own one).

 

Negitive: There may be a higher price for your own TLD's, because there may be setup and administration fees, however I don't know the in's and out's of how ICANN register their .com, but I assume that its going to be alot harder to register them if all these different TLD's are comming in. It may be automated, I am not sure but I think it may be costly. And after a while, the appeal will just wear off I think, and people will be used to all these different domains. I also think that its easier remembering .com, .co.uk, etc. If you have all these different TLD's, then thats one extra thing to remember. Last of all, I am not sure if there would be a limit to the amount of caracters you can use, because it will start to get annoying id you have longer URLs.

 

Thats my opinion and personal issues with it.
