MACscr
How can i user cancel a domain? Aka, they dont want to renew it. I know they can disable the auto renew option, but an invoice would still be created. Am i missing something?
chickendippers
Disable auto renew will stop the invoice from being generated.
MACscr
Right, but what if the user wants to cancel the domain after the invoice has been created? Most of the time they dont even think about it until the invoice has been created and sent to them. The question is, why cant users cancel domains like any other product?
dkent
Domain name registrations are handled in a different way to hosting services. The official registrar that the domain was purchased through (whether through the site or API call) will have options to disable domain renew also. To actually cancel a domain is not possible, but you can disable auto renew which is recommended. If the client simply doesn't want the domain no longer, you just leave it in their account and you can remove it completely from their account once the domain has expired (remember the grace period also). MACscr
Here is the problem though. We have clients with hundreds of domains. They get an invoice about an upcoming renewal. They decide they do not want to renew the domain. They click on "do not renew", but domain will still be renewed because the invoice has already been created and if they pay with CC, it will automatically get paid when the invoice is due. Expecting clients to open a ticket and us having to manually cancel the invoice every time this happens its a waste of client and staffs time.
chickendippers
Domains aren't 'cancelled' as such, they are simply left to expire. We make the renewal process very clear in the domain reminder emails, if a customer did get automatically charged for a domain they subsequently decided they didn't want to renew, I feel we would be within our right to tell them 'tough luck'.
othellotech
They get an invoice about an upcoming renewal. They decide they do not want to renew the domain Train them to tick the "do not renew" when they get the "well in advance" notification from WHMCS rather than the invoice Or cron job the setting of the "do not renew" flag and make them click renew manually.
FreedomHostUSA
Another problem is, whether or not the client decides to renew, Enom has already renewed before the expire date and I am charged. If the client decides to cancel, still before expiration date, it still renews. What a crappy system.

What a crappy system. @FreedomHostUSA I think this is up to the registrar themselves and whether or not they add a setting in their control panel. Hexonet @PapaKai has this included in their control panel.
