Smarty syntax

I'm trying to add a page to WHMCS and all the basics are there. However i'm stuck when it comes to defining a couple of variables.

In the script I have variables such as <?=$currMonth;?> which I have added as variables like $smartyvalues["cm_uptime"] = $cm_uptime; then called them in the template with {$currMonth} and that works fine.

However, I also have lines such as <?=$row['cm_uptime'];?> in the script. I've tried defining $row and then calling it in the template with {$row.cm_uptime} but it doesn't work.

Any ideas how this part should be done?

Cheers
