VAT on Invoices

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I need to order a new licence over the next month.

I now see that VAT is added - not an issues, as I can claim it back.

However my VAT returns are done in sterling (as are everyone else's ;) )

How are others going to figure this out?

Do you wait until the conversion is done on your credit card, and allocate the 17.5% to VAT or is there another way.

I had always assumed that any company charging VAT had to invoice id pounds sterling on a VAT invoice.

Just need clarification as to how we show the purchase on our VAT returns.

Many thanks.

Looking at the HMRC website it states..

What details must I include on a VAT invoice?

You must show:

  • a unique and sequential identifying number
  • your name, address and VAT registration number
  • the date of issue of the invoice
  • time of supply (tax point) - if different from date of issue of the invoice
  • your customer's name (or trading name) and address
  • a description identifying the goods or services supplied
  • the unit price (see Notice 700, para 16.3.2)
  • the rate of any cash discount offered
  • the total amount of VAT charged, shown in sterling
  • the gross total amount payable, excluding VAT

According to this info - the amount of VAT charged must be showed in sterling.

Matt - could you please clarify this - as I do not wish to have issues with working out the wrong amount of VAT to claim back.

Many thanks.

Although if you talk to HMRC they are happy for it to be "your billing ccy" - one of the companies I consult for do all their billing in euros and the VAT office were very happy for them to invoice and charge vat in Euros, as long as the VAT 100 was returned in GBP at the mid-market rate on the date of competing the forms.
