If for some reason you have an issue with cron, then this will prevent emails from being sent. However, cron running every 5 mins does not necessarily mean it is completing successfully. And even if it were completing, it doesn't mean it is doing so, without errors. In light of this, could you please check to see that you cron is setup and running and completing successfully without any errors.
